MY HAIR WAS AWAKE. I WAS NOT. 😂
Let’s talk about sleep debt in perimenopause.
This was me one morning near the beginning of my perimenopause journey (5+ years ago). At the time, I didn’t fully understand what was happening. I only knew I was awake, exhausted and apparently conducting electricity through my hair.
Fast-forward to this morning, when my Oura ring called me out.
I slept for 7 hours and 14 minutes, which sounds fairly respectable. But my sleep score was only 68. My restfulness needed attention, and both my REM and deep sleep were low.
Because sleep isn’t only about how long you’re in bed. It’s about whether your body is getting the restorative sleep it actually needs.
What I like about is that it doesn’t treat one night as the whole story. It looks at your patterns over time and estimates how much sleep your body typically needs to recover and feel its best.
That number isn’t exactly the same for every body, and our needs can change depending on stress, physical activity, disrupted sleep and how much recovery our bodies need.
Sleep is the foundation the rest of our health stands on.
When that foundation starts to crack, everything feels harder: energy, mood, cravings, focus, stress tolerance, exercise recovery and making the choices we know will help us feel better.
Sleep debt builds when we repeatedly get less sleep than our bodies need. Poor-quality sleep can also leave us under-recovered, even when the number of hours looks “good.”
And one heroic sleep-in on Saturday doesn’t magically fix it. I wish it did!
This can become especially complicated during perimenopause and menopause. Hormonal changes, night sweats, temperature shifts, stress, pain, anxiety and those bloody 3 a.m. wake-ups can all affect how well we sleep. And really, every night at 3 a.m. ugh! However….
This is where I can help!
