Pregnancy is more than just the pelvic floor. 🤰
In pelvic physiotherapy, we look at the body as a whole, because the pelvic floor, pelvis, hips, lower back and breathing system are deeply connected.
In this session, we are using an exercise ball to work on:
• Pelvic tilts
• Pelvic circles
• Gentle side-to-side weight shifts
• Balance and postural control
• Pelvic and hip mobility
• Coordinating movement with breathing
These movements can be incorporated into an individualized pregnancy physiotherapy program, particularly for women experiencing pregnancy-related low-back pain, pelvic girdle/SI-region discomfort or difficulty with movement.
As pregnancy progresses, practising comfortable pelvic movement and different supported positions can also help you become familiar with movement strategies that may be useful during labour.
Research supports the use of exercise/birth balls during labour, particularly for helping with pain and comfort. However, we should not claim that pelvic circles alone “open the pelvis” or guarantee an easier delivery. They are one part of a broader approach to pregnancy and birth preparation.
Your pelvic health matters throughout pregnancy.
And it’s September — you may only have a few months left to use your extended health benefits.
If your plan includes physiotherapy coverage, now is a good time to check your remaining benefits.
Don’t wait until your symptoms become harder to manage.
A pelvic physiotherapy assessment looks at the pelvic floor and beyond, helping you understand how your whole body is contributing to your symptoms and creating a practical, individualized plan for pregnancy, birth preparation and postpartum recovery.
