I like to think of it as a sober psychedelic experience: a chance to step outside the ordinary for an evening, enter another world through breath and sound, and meet yourself more deeply along the way.

Jay Ziebarth is a musician, breathwork guide, animator and multidisciplinary artist who performs with multiple bands, works across sound, voice and visual art, and somehow seems to have collected an unreasonable number of creative abilities for one human. 😄

Chauntell Dietrich, Registered Social Worker and Animist Minister (The Animist Therapist), will open and close the evening and hold the therapeutic space surrounding Jay’s breathwork journey, with time afterward for grounding, integration, tea and a gentle return to ordinary reality.

REMEMBERING THE SPIRIT OF THE HARVEST 🎃

For thousands of years, humans have gathered to celebrate the harvest, honour ancestors, and give thanks to the many beings that sustain life.

The sun, rain, soil, plants, animals, and unseen worlds beneath our feet and all around us. Every harvest is the work of countless lives, not just our own.

Across many animist traditions, the world was understood not as a collection of resources, but as a living community of relationships.

Yet somewhere along the way, many of us have become disconnected from the land, from spirit, from community, and from the deeper meaning of our existence.

Colonization violently accelerated this separation through stolen lands, forced displacement, and attempts to destroy Indigenous cultures, spiritual traditions, and relationships with place. These atrocities continue to have consequences today, alongside ongoing Indigenous resistance and cultural resurgence.

We cannot truly honour the Earth while overlooking the peoples whose relationships with these lands have been violently disrupted.

Returning to the true spirit of the harvest isn’t about recreating the past, but remembering what we’ve forgotten… that we belong to the Earth, rather than the other way around. That the world is not here for our consumption, but for reciprocity. That gratitude is more than a feeling, it’s a relationship expressed through how we live.

May this season be an opportunity to reconnect with land, spirit, meaning, and one another.

To remember how to honour what sustains us, protect what is sacred, and consider what we can give in return. 🍄‍🟫

📜 ✦ By paper, post and peculiar transmission, notice of Earth & Spirit Talks has made its way into the streets of Hamilton. ✦

Once a month, Earth in Sky becomes a little tea tavern for curious humans, wandering minds and people with suspiciously large questions. A cozy place to gather, drink hot leaf water, hear from interesting people, trade tales, follow conversational side quests, entertain strange possibilities and give all those big, weird questions about existence somewhere to hang out besides your brain at 2 a.m. 😵‍💫😅

Each gathering begins with a short talk around a question or theme, followed by Q&A and a facilitated group conversation. We’ll bring questions for the room too, so you don’t have to arrive knowing what to say.

🌿 OUR FIRST CONVERSATION: WHAT IS ANIMISM?

Chauntell Dietrich of The Animist Therapist, Social Worker & Animist Minister, joins physicist, psychologist, philosopher & mystic Zachary R.J Strong to explore what animism is, what it means to experience the world as alive, and how it might shape the way we live today.

Then the conversation opens to you. Questions, stories, curiosities and different perspectives are welcome.

You don’t need to be an animist. You don’t need to be spiritual. You definitely don’t need to have the answers.

Think less lecture and more travellers meeting at a tavern and swapping ideas and stories about the strange, beautiful experience of being alive. 🌙🍄

🍂🕯️ The darker months are what Earth in Sky was made for.

Earth in Sky is a House of Elemental Care. 🤍
Care that comes in many shapes, forms, energies.
A place for therapeutic, creative and spiritual experiences that bring us back into relationship with ourselves, each other, Earth and spirit.

And importantly, this happens in person.

In a time when so much of life happens through screens, we need places to put our phones away, leave the house and be around other people without having to perform, network, make endless small talk or be particularly outgoing.

October’s gatherings are intentionally small, cozy and low-pressure. They’re designed for introvert-friendly social time, nervous system regulation, meaningful connection, creative expression and exploring the mythos of your own life. The stories, symbols, transitions and questions that make a life meaningful.

✦ This is what we mean by real-world mythology. Not escaping ordinary life, but experiencing it more deeply. Paying attention to the stories we’re living, the thresholds we’re crossing, the relationships we’re tending and the meaning we’re making along the way.

🎶 Listen, move, make, wonder, talk or simply be.
📵 Let your phone disappear for a couple of hours.

September 30 marks the time of year when Indigenous children of what we call Canada were taken from their families and sent to residential schools.

For more than 150 years, the Canadian government and Christian churches operated these schools as part of a policy of assimilation. More than 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children attended.

Children were separated from family, community, language, culture and spiritual traditions. Many experienced neglect, illness, abuse and murder.
Many never returned home.

The removal of Indigenous children did not end there. Social work and child welfare are part of this history, too. During the Sixties Scoop, thousands of Indigenous children were removed from their families, and Indigenous children remain disproportionately represented in child welfare today.

As both a social worker and animist minister, I have a responsibility to know where the institutions and traditions I work within have caused harm, and to examine the assumptions I bring into my own work.

Helping can become harm when one culture’s definition of health, family, spirituality or a “good life” is treated as universal.

This matters deeply to Therapeutic Animism and Earth in Sky. Our work centres relationship with ourselves, one another, Earth and spirit.

Across human history, peoples around the world have experienced conquest, forced conversion, assimilation and the suppression of ancestral ways.

For us, reconnection means learning the history, listening to Indigenous voices, respecting what is not ours to take, supporting Indigenous-led work, questioning systems of domination, and tending our responsibilities to the living world.

Today, I hold grief for what was taken and deep gratitude for what survived, was protected and continues to be reclaimed.

Remembrance asks something of us: learn from Indigenous voices, support Indigenous-led work, and examine the colonial assumptions that may still shape how we care, help and heal.

May we remember what was taken, honour what survived, and help create a world where no one is separated from who they are and where they belong.
