PCOS is now Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, or PMOS.

The new name is much better reflection of the true nature of the condition. Changes in insulin, androgens, neuroendocrine AND ovarian hormones contribute to the pathology of PMOS. Implying that it stems only from the ovaries is just plain wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is why the name change is long overdue! PMOS increases risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, liver disease, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea and more. But many patients who present with the condition to their doctor will get a recommendation for birth control and no further work up.

I am hopeful that the new name will encourage practitioners to recognize PMOS as the multi system condition that it is. Allowing patients to access deeper investigations and more comprehensive treatment. 🤍
