Congratulations to all including Dozie Ubosi 🎉- a graduate student and flash‑talk presenter at our recent Annual Retreat, supervised by one of our associate members, Dr. Xian Wang and Dr. Yongjun Lai of Smith Engineering at Queen's University - on receiving a Research Training Award from Canadian Cancer Society. Well done! 👏

Meet this year’s Canadian Cancer Society Research Training Awards recipients! With our support, these master’s-level trainees are engaging in exciting, impactful cancer research – even at the earliest stages of their careers.

Ngueyanouba Calvin Djiraimadje is studying childhood cancer diagnoses before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. His research will provide important insight into care disparities and help guide healthcare policies to better protect children with cancer during future public health crises.

Wildfire smoke exposure is linked to higher lung cancer risk and lower survival rates. Kenneth Ofori-Amanfo is studying how lung cells react to smoke and how this contributes to cancer risk. The work could eventually lead to better prevention and new targeted treatments for people with lung cancer.

Lung cancer often arises in narrow, fragile spaces deep in the lungs. These tumours can be hard to biopsy – so Chukwudozie Ubosi is developing a tiny robotic device made of soft materials. Using AI-assisted magnetic steering, the robot will be able to precisely navigate the lung – leading to easier, safer tissue biopsies.

Who can resist a bake sale and lemonade stand, especially when it's for a good cause! Elliot's dad is currently undergoing cancer treatment at Kingston Health Sciences Centre so she, along with her friends, Macie, Sonia, Neve, and Madelyn, sold some sweet treats and ice cold lemonade in support of cancer research. In one busy afternoon, they raised $300 for the Canadian Cancer Trials Group, a division of the Sinclair Cancer Research Institute. Well done, and thank you for your hard (and delicious) work!
