Wildfire smoke from northwestern Ontario has settled over the GTA, and Environment Canada has an orange air quality warning in effect. It's also 33°C, feeling like 36.
f you have a parent, grandparent, or older neighbour living alone, please check on them today. Seniors 65+ are among the most vulnerable to wildfire smoke and this is landing on top of a heat wave.
What to check:
🪟 Are their windows and doors closed?
❄️ Do they have air conditioning or a cool space? If there's both heat and smoke, staying cool comes first.
💊 Do they have their inhaler or heart/lung medications on hand?
🚶 Have they cancelled any outdoor plans; walks, errands, appointments?
📞 Have they heard from anyone today?
Watch for: coughing, wheezing, chest pain, or shortness of breath. If it's serious, don't wait, call 911.

A few signs your parent may be at higher risk:
⚠️ They hold onto furniture or walls while walking
⚠️ They've started avoiding stairs
⚠️ They move slowly or cautiously, especially in the bathroom
⚠️ They've had a "close call" they mentioned casually
The bathroom and the stairs are the two highest-risk zones. A caregiver providing supervision during bathing and mobility can dramatically reduce the risk.
