DENIAL

During my first pregnancy with my daughter Dani (short for Daniella), I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

This type of diabetes goes away once you give birth but it is precursor to possibly becoming a diabetic later in life.

My doctor was very concerned due to the fact that I also had a high chance of becoming diabetic due to my genetic history with my father having been a diabetic. I ignored her warnings to watch what I ate. To do something before it was too late.

I continued to eat what I wanted, when I wanted and had gestational diabetes once again when I was pregnant with my second child, my son Albert. I continued to gain weight. I continued to let my health go down the tubes. I was always tired and exhausted when I was raising my two beautiful children.

My doctor warned me that with two gestational diabetic pregnancies under my belt, and a diabetic parent, the likelihood of my becoming a diabetic like my father was even stronger.

But, instead of taking action, I buried my head in the sand once more and continued to be in DENIAL.

Not even sitting by my father’s side as he underwent kidney dialysis impacted me enough to change my lifestyle!

I convinced myself that it wouldn’t happen to me! But it did. I became a diabetic just like my dad. I ballooned to over 320 lbs. I needed a cane in order to walk.

Is this where you are sitting right now? You know you should be doing something about your health but you are in DENIAL.

Take that first step…DM me. Let's talk.

Weight loss and getting control of your health isn’t just about the scale.

I paid attention to the way I felt, how the bloating and inflammation started to disappear.

I would celebrate and view not gaining any weight as a successful week because it meant I didn’t gain any weight.

I celebrated when I lost 1 pound in 2 weeks.

I celebrated when I lost no weight because it meant I hadn't gained weight.

I celebrated when I pricked my finger and the blood monitor showed that my blood sugars were in normal range.

I celebrated when the numbers on the scale didn’t move yet my pants were loose and my sweater was baggy.

I realized that I also had to balance my hormones and get better sleep.

And I shed tears when I joined the “One-derland” club; this is when you have not seen the number “one” in front of your weight in many, many years.

I started yo-yo dieting in my late teens as a result of the incessant teasing I endured in high school. Being teased mercifully resulted in low self esteem, no confidence, binge eating, constant dieting and addictions to foods, especially pizza, pasta, potatoes, rice, cookies, cakes, chips, fries, pies and everything in between.

It is easier to lose weight in a short amount of time when you’re in your teens and twenties as your metabolism is more efficient.

If I had a family wedding or party to go to, I would purchase an outfit that was a bit too tight and then starve myself in order to fit into it. Have YOU done this?

But, as soon as I had reached the goal of fitting into the outfit and being able to wear it…once the party was over, I would let go and start eating with abandon.

My diets were short term solutions to an ongoing problem. Over the years, I gained more and more weight. All the yo-yo dieting affected my metabolism. It slowed down to a halt.

I tried to lose weight but would give up and gain it all back, and more. Eventually I ballooned to weighing over 320 lbs, became a diabetic and was placed on medication. Does this sound familiar to you? No need to comment if you don't want to. But I know some of you are resonating with this post. You can DM me privately. I know what you are going through.

Do not give up on your health. Do not just accept that you are a diabetic and need to take medication for the rest of your life. I have lost 170 lbs, gotten off medication and sent diabetes into remission.

I miss my dad, Cesare Morrone. He passed away 22 years ago.

He was diagnosed as a diabetic when I was in my teens and all I remember was constant doctor and hospital visits, meetings with nutritionists and a growing medicine cabinet. He was placed on insulin as soon as he was diagnosed. He ended up having many health issues over the years.

At the end, he was on a cocktail of 18 different medications.

The year he passed away, I sat beside him in the hospital, holding his hand, as the dialysis machine performed the job my father’s kidneys could no longer do on their own. My father's kidneys had shut down and thus he was required to undergo kidney dialysis three times a week.

10 years ago, as my weight crept up to over 320 lbs, I realized that I was on the same trajectory as my late father if I didn’t do something about my weight, my diabetes, my health.

It wasn't easy. I took it one step at a time. I made small changes. I accepted that I could not become healthy overnight. I accepted that I didn't put on all the weight in one day and that it wouldn't come off quickly…I celebrated when I lost one pound as much as when I lost 10 lbs, then 20 lbs and so on and I celebrated even when I didn't lose weight because at least I hadn't gain weight that week.

Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing my journey to a healthier, happier me in the hope that my story will inspire others to change their mindset and achieve the same transformation that I did.

I have lost 170 lbs, gotten off medication and sent diabetes into remission. My father would have been so proud of me.
