After reading hundreds of food journals, one thing stands out over and over again: most people are eating too few calories — often by 200–400 calories per day.

Yes, they may lose weight in the short term… but often at the expense of muscle mass, hormone balance, metabolic health, and long-term sustainability.

The problem with focusing ONLY on the scale is that it can work initially, but over time it may contribute to the very struggles so many people face in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s — feeling like no matter what they do, they can’t lose weight anymore.

I don’t generally eat boxed cereals. Most contain higher levels of sugars than I want to eat at breakfast. But my foot is in a cast so quick meals and snacks are essential. This combo of Nature’s Path Optimum Power cereal + Natrel Protein milk give a whopping 30 grams of protein with a great source of calcium, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin B12 (your energy vitamin) and some magnesium. And for an added check mark 9 grams of fibre. These vitamins and minerals are often lacking in women, particularly over the age of 45 and contribute to many menopausal symptoms. Of course men can benefit from them too.

To a nutrition nerd (and a professional practitioner) this is exciting 😂 My first recommendation to clients is food for nutrients first. Supplements are a bit of added insurance but should also be treated as such, they supplement a diet that supports your health goals. Just because a supplement or product is labeled « natural » or « organic » does not make it risk free. In fact many contain additives and combinations that can work against your health goals. It’s important to do your research or consult a licensed professional to help you. Here’s a tip: if you are taking more than 3-4 supplements per day, you are very likely taking too many.

Make good food choices that promote your health goals (not big changes, just intentional small changes consistently), hydrate well with filtered water, take some supplements as added insurance, aim for good sleep and do some extra movement everyday + some some form of strength/agility building.

Keep it simple, keep it consistent. You’ve got this.

As a wellness practitioner who recently had surgery myself, I’ve been reminded just how important nutrition is during recovery. Physical therapy is essential, but the foods you eat can also play a powerful role in healing.

The picture here shows some of the groceries I picked up to focus on anti-inflammatory, healing foods. For me, meal prep was key so nourishing meals and snacks were easy to access, especially on the days when energy was low.

In the early days after surgery, simple foods like soups and broths can help with hydration and digestion. As recovery continues, it’s helpful to include protein for tissue repair, fiber-rich foods to support digestion, probiotic foods for gut health, and key nutrients that support healing, including:

• Vitamin C: bell peppers, broccoli, berries, citrus, potatoes
• Zinc: meat, poultry, fish, dairy, beans, nuts, whole grains
• Vitamin D: yogurt, fortified dairy, eggs, fatty fish
• Calcium: yogurt, milk, cheese, fortified plant-based beverages, leafy greens
• Protein: eggs, yogurt, chicken, fish, cottage cheese, legumes

🥚 Egg combo
• 2 whole eggs + 3 egg whites
→ fast scramble or hard-boiled for grab & go
(~20–22g protein)

🐟 Canned tuna or salmon
• 1 small can (about 100–120g drained)
