We are looking for journalists, content creators, podcasters, vloggers, muralists, data visualizers from Mozambique, Uganda, Nigeria, Angola, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Tanzania, South Sudan, Malawi, and Zambia to take part in the Voices for Climate Justice initiative.
The 12-month program is delivered in partnership with Comic Relief, and will support 15–20 storytellers with training, mentorship, content amplification and grants of up to US$4,000 to create powerful stories that spark public conversation and inspire action.
We’re looking for creative ideas that can help explain how climate change, debt, gender, and fossil fuels affect people and communities across Africa. Selected storytellers will receive training in climate justice, data storytelling, and narrative framing before working with researchers and partners to develop accurate, engaging stories based on research.
Grantees will be selected based on the originality of their idea, relevance to ANF’s mission of storytelling beyond stereotypes, relevance to the gender-debt-fossil fuel focus and reach or standing within their platform or community.

“Immigrant women have always been the most vulnerable people in the prison system because there is no accountability for the guards.”

In prisons and detention centers, strip searches are treated as routine security procedures. But incarcerated women describe them as invasive, humiliating and traumatizing—and as a practice that can be used by guards to intimidate and abuse them.

In the cover story this month, Khawla Nakua investigates the everyday violence of prison strip searches, the lack of accountability surrounding them and the campaign to eliminate the practice.

🇩🇰🇬🇱 Forced Contraception: Denmark to Compensate Greenlandic Women

For decades, starting in the 1960s, Denmark carried out a contraception campaign in Greenland that resulted in more than 4,000 Greenlandic women and girls receiving IUDs. Many later said they were not properly informed or had not given consent. Some were as young as 12.

After years of controversy, Denmark’s parliament on Thursday passed a bill offering eligible women a one-time compensation payment of 300,000 Danish kroner, roughly €40,000–$47,000.

But the controversy is far from over. Greenland is set to publish two long-awaited reports examining whether the campaign violated human rights and international law, including whether the actions could meet the legal definition of genocide.

The findings could pave the way for further political or legal action and deepen scrutiny of Denmark’s colonial-era policies toward Greenland.
