In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), winter ❄️ is associated with the Water element and the kidney system. It is considered a time to conserve energy, 🔌⚡️ nourish the kidneys, and support overall well-being. Water represents the realm of the collective and personal unconscious. She links all realms experienced in time, weaving the past, present and future, ancestors and descendants. She is the source of all inherited psychic intelligence.

The Water Archetype is the Philosopher within. A time to bring to light that which is hidden - uncovering new knowledge, dispelling mystery, and eroding ignorance.
Our favorite rituals to nourish waters + kidneys:

🥬 Nourish kidney ‘qi’ with black beans, kidney beans, walnuts, black sesame seeds, dark leafy greens + good mineral salts.
🍵 Enjoy soups, stews, broths, hot teas + warm water with lemon. Eat seasonally - root vegetables, winter squashes + dark greens to support the body’s internal warmth.
🧣 Stay warm by dressing in layers; focus on head, neck, lower back + feet. The kidneys are believed to be vulnerable to cold.
🧘🏾 Engage in gentle exercises like Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or yoga to support the flow of energy in the body.
🌊 Assist water movement + management within the body. Sweating cleanses + reduces blood pressure.
🌞 Rise with the sun, rest when the sun sets. Winter is a time for rest + conserving energy.
🌿 Include qi-tonifying herbs like ginger, garlic, cinnamon + other warming spices in your meals. Also ginseng, astragalus, he shou wu + d**g quai are all herbs that help to tonify qi + nourish the blood.

Embrace the archetype of water. Embrace your insight, intuition, knowing, and connection to the collective unconscious. Embrace your imaginative intellect, psychic awareness, wisdom, and compassion. Resist the urge to overdo it. Give your body the fuel it needs during this time of hibernation and rejuvenation.

The shedding of leaves in autumn reminds us of life’s impermanence. In Chinese Medicine, autumn is the season of the lungs and letting go of what no longer serves us. A shedding of the old to make space for what’s the come.

What’s holding you back from realizing your truest and fullest potential? ✨
I offer an array of modalities that can help to facilitate a release in the body on all levels - physically, emotionally & spiritually.

Happy first day of spring🌸

The Neijing, an ancient text on Chinese health and healing has a chapter dedicated to the art of life through the four seasons.

An excerpt reads “the three months of spring bring about the revitalization of all things in nature. During spring, it is advised to retire early and rise early as well as go walking to absorb the fresh invigorating energy. One should attempt to correspond to it directly by being open and unsuppressed, both physically and emotionally”.

On a physical level it can be beneficial to
- Exercise more but in a way that’s uplifting for you! Dance, run, play!

- Wear loose fitting clothing to promote the circulation of qi (tight fitting spandex attire can restrict qi flow)

- Stretch to loosen up the muscles and tendons which are associated with the liver

Emotionally, we can look towards developing a state of equanimity. Spring is the season of the liver which is responsible for the free flow of our emotions. It is the season that’s most conducive to letting go of old stagnant emotions and patterns that are no longer serving us (more on TCM & the liver in a future post!). ☯️
