🚨 DOG EATING P**P? (Coprophagia) Yep—gross. Also common.

I heard this complaint constantly in practice: “Doc… please stop my dog from eating poop.” Fair request. Because nobody wants kisses right after a “backyard snack.”

So why do dogs do this?
Sometimes it’s instinct. UC Davis researcher Dr. Benjamin Hart suggested ancestral canids may have eaten fresh f***s around denning areas to reduce parasite spread. Not charming… but possibly wired in.

A few weird-but-useful facts:
1. About 20% of dogs show serious poop-eating at some point
2. More common in multi-dog homes
3. Females are more likely than males
4. 92% prefer fresh stool (1–2 days old)
5. 85% prefer another dog’s stool
6. “Greedy eaters” and food thieves are more likely to do it

When to look deeper:
Most cases are behavioral, but sometimes it’s linked to digestive enzyme deficiency, poor absorption, vitamin deficiency (especially B vitamins), parasites, poor diet quality, chronic digestive issues, excess hunger, stress, or boredom. If it’s sudden or paired with weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, increased appetite, or a poor coat—get your dog checked.

The 3-step plan I’d try:

1) Add a good vitamin/mineral supplement
Some dogs may be chasing a nutritional gap. One theory: thiamine (B1). F***l microbes can produce it—so a deficient dog may try to “get it from the source.” Lovely, right?

2) Try digestive enzymes
High-carb diets can leave partially digested nutrients in stool, making it more “interesting.” Look for amylase, lipase, protease.
Start: Âź capsule per 20 lbs daily, mixed into food.

3) Make the stool taste bad (short-term)
Products like Forbid use an MSG-like ingredient. Not for long-term use, but it can work fast.
Amount: ⅛ tsp on food daily for a few days up to a week.

Don’t forget the basics:
Pick up stool quickly. Keep the yard clean. Walk after meals. Improve the diet (more protein, fewer carbs). Increase exercise and mental stimulation. And don’t punish after the fact—it usually just makes them sneakier.

🚨 4 DOG FEEDING MISTAKES THAT RAISE DISEASE RISK (AND WHAT I’D DO INSTEAD)

Cancer is now one of the leading causes of death in dogs, with estimates as high as 1 in 3 developing cancer in their lifetime. That number hits me personally—my last three dogs died of cancer.

This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making better choices where you can.

Food doesn’t just “feed” your dog. It can influence how genes behave over time (epigenetics). In plain language: diet can turn certain disease-related pathways up or down.

Here are the 4 feeding mistakes I avoid:

1) Letting your dog become overweight
A major lifespan study found dogs kept lean lived up to 2 years longer and delayed serious disease. You should be able to feel ribs easily, see a waist from above, and a tucked abdomen from the side. Extra fat isn’t just weight—it’s inflammatory.
Do instead: adjust portions based on your dog’s body, not the bag.

2) Too many treats
Treats quietly become a daily carb bomb. Many are basically dog cookies, and extra glucose gets stored as fat.
Do instead: use single-ingredient animal protein treats (freeze-dried chicken, liver). Keep treats to

Dog Cancer Prevention Starts With the Food Bowl

If your dog is carrying extra weight, that is not just “more to love.”

It may also be more inflammation, more disease risk, and more trouble later.
