🚨New publication from the EPCHL🚨

We asked cardiovascular rehabilitation programs across Canada how they test fitness - here’s what they told us:

Most centres rely on submaximal exercise tests, with the Bruce treadmill protocol and the 6‑minute walk test used most often. At the same time, there’s a lot of variation in how and why programs choose specific tests. This variability matters, because how we assess fitness directly influences exercise prescription, patient care in cardiovascular rehabilitation, and comparisons between programs.

Congratulations to Jennie Wong for not only leading this thorough evaluation (no stone left unturned with these CONSORT ), but also her first, first author publication!

Thank you to our collaborators Ariany Marques Vieira, Matheus Hausen (the talent behind the data visualization / figures 👏 ), Lindsay Lew, John Buckley, and Kristi Adamo.

My name is Matheus Mistura and I’m a Clinical Research Coordinator under the supervision of Dr. Jennifer Reed at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

We are currently recruiting women living with heart disease for a research study which seeks to compare two exercise training programs on fitness and mental health.

Participants will have health measures taken (such as height, weight, blood pressure, and body composition), undergo exercise tests, and complete questionnaires. They will then be randomly assigned to one of two 12-week virtual exercise training programs (moderate-intensity continuous exercise training group, or high-intensity interval training group). The exercise sessions will be free of charge and conducted virtually.

We hope this study will provide valuable information on the role of physical activity in improving clinical, exercise and mental health outcomes in women with heart disease.

If interested, please contact the research coordinator at [email protected] or 613-696-7000 ext. 15944.

We are wearing red today to support women’s heart health❣️

Heart disease is the number one killer of women worldwide and the leading cause of premature death in women in Canada. Yet, women remain under-studied, under-diagnosed, under-treated and under-aware.

On May 10th and 11th our lab had the pleasure of leading the workshop “The Role of Exercise: Why it is important in cardiac care” for Discovery Day. Discovery Day gives secondary school students the opportunity to explore various careers in health sciences and medicine. We loved meeting everyone! 🫀🥼🧬🔬
