Meet the man behind the science of blend mushrooms! This is Omoanghe Isikhuemhen. From a young age, Dr. Omon foraged for wild mushrooms with his family in the tropical rainforest of Esan Kingdom, Nigeria. Raised in a family of subsistence farmers, his father, a forestry officer, emphasized education as the way out of poverty. As Dr. Omon puts it, “[education] was the only way out of the ghetto.” Today, Dr. Omon is a Professor of Mushroom Biology and Fungal Biotechnology and one of the world’s leading mycologists, with over 124 peer-reviewed publications. He also gives back to his community, teaching single mothers in Ghana to grow and sell mushrooms to fund their children’s education. Not only can our overall health improve, but growing mushrooms can also provide a sustainable source of income for people in many struggling parts of the world!
