Why Dave Wears These Colorful Braces
A few friends have asked about Dave’s braces, so we thought we’d share!
These vibrant devices are called AFOs—short for Ankle-Foot Orthoses they look more like braces. Now that the weather has turned warm and Dave is back in shorts, they’re a lot more visible, and naturally, people are curious.
Dave wears them because of a condition called Cauda Equina Syndrome, a rare neurological emergency that damaged the nerves in his lower spine. This has affected his muscle strength, coordination, and balance, especially from the knees down.
The AFOs help:
âś… Support his ankles and feet so he can stand and walk more safely
âś… Improve stability and alignment to reduce fatigue and discomfort
âś… Prevent tripping or falling, especially on uneven ground
âś… Encourage better walking patterns to keep his body moving in a healthier way
The colours? Just a little joy and personality! 💙🧡💚🌀
We’re proud of how far Dave has come on this journey—and grateful for the support and curiosity from all of you. If you ever want to know more about Cauda Equina Syndrome or rehab, we’re always happy to talk!
