Well hallo, snake skin hat band! I found a beautiful blue, gold and black banded garter snake, sadly hit by a car and at his life’s end. I first saw the giant turkey vulture waiting patiently overhead, which attuned me to the snake’s plight.
There was no way out of his misery, and I had to end his life. These things, always, feel awful.
I’ve worked with snake imagery and myth and medicine for many many years.
The snake was the first being tattooed on my body.
I respect their role as medicine keepers, and the shedding of skins… dearly.
So to be able to work with one, in this way, that was just the perfect size to wrap around my forehead…. Feels particularly special.
***process: I skinned him, with a single slice down his belly. Long dead, he jumped, and my scream reverberated round the property. I alum tanned him, so he’s flexible but not strong. I used leather glue to bolster him with deer buckskin.
