πŸƒπŸ“š Do you feel that back-to-school flutter in the air?

It's so easy to meet September like a starting gun... but our nervous systems love a gentle on-ramp so much more.

This week's blog is a soft reminder that a fresh start doesn't have to be a frantic one.

Functional Healing in the Kitchen - episode 4 πŸ„

πŸ„πŸŸ« Chanterelle mushroom processing day! πŸ„πŸŸ«

I love mushrooms but holy moly they take a long time to clean!

While I worked, I sprinkled in some leg pendulum swings, calf raises, 4 point rocking, balance work (my very modified kitchen-counter version of tree pose πŸ˜‚) and some cat/cow stretches while leaning into the counter. Nothing fancy and nothing that required stopping what I was doing for very long. Just little bits of movement woven into the hours I was already spending cleaning mushrooms.

And then, at one point, I decided my body needed a proper break.

So I went outside, ate a huckleberry lemon ginger popsicle and enjoyed a few minutes in the fresh air with my dog who also got a frozen treat to enjoy… of the chicken bone broth variety… because apparently laying around and looking cute is hard work too! 🐾🧑

It took FOREVER to get all those chanterelles cleaned and ready for the dehydrator, but I will appreciate my stash over the next year when I am eating many delicious dishes. And right now my house smells absolutely amazing... like slow roasted caramelized apricots!

Functional Healing is all about recognizing that the hours you're already spending doing the things you need to do can become opportunities to move, stretch, balance, breathe and take care of yourself... with popsicles! πŸ€ͺ

πŸ„ Functional Healing Tip this week: Take a lesson from mycelium... stay connected, stay adaptable, keep moving.

Functional Healing in the Kitchen - episode 3 πŸ‘

Peach processing day(s)!!!

Setting up my workstation with everything within reach is time well spent. It helps me avoid all that unnecessary twisting, overreaching, and rushing that can leave my shoulders and back complaining later.

Work smarter not harder is my new motto. Rather than carrying a heavy pot full of water across the kitchen, I put the empty pot on the stove first and bring the water to it.

A cushioned mat under my feet makes standing for hours much more comfortable, and while I'm peeling peaches, I try not to become a statue. I shift my weight, soften my knees, take deep breaths, and keep my body moving instead of locking into one position.

That's one of my favourite Functional Healing reminders... movement doesn't have to be big to make a big difference. Sometimes it's just paying attention to how you're moving while you're already doing the things that need to get done.

My Functional Healing Tip this week:
Don't just preserve your harvest... preserve the body that's harvesting it. 🧑

πŸ«πŸ’πŸ‰The smallest, sweetest practice for all your summer BBQs: one slow, conscious breath before your first bite πŸ₯•πŸ…πŸ«›

It takes three seconds, no one even has to know, and it gently shifts your body into "rest and digest."

Functional Healing in the Kitchen ... episode 2 πŸ…

Tomato processing season has just begun...

Which means washing, cutting, seasoning, dehydrating, freeze drying... and spending a lot of time at the kitchen counter.

Before I picked up this heavy box of tomatoes, I remembered to do something I probably wouldn't have thought about a few years ago.

A nice deep squat, a steady breath or two and I let my legs do the work instead of asking my back to do all the lifting.

But here's where Functional Healing really kicked in.

I started slicing tomatoes and reaching way over to place every single one on the dehydrator trays.

After just a couple of tomatoes I caught myself thinking...

"If I keep doing this for the next two hours, my shoulders and neck are going to let me know about it tonight."

So I stopped. I rearranged my cutting boards and moved the trays closer.

That one small adjustment meant I could keep my shoulders relaxed, stop overreaching, and let my body work with me instead of against me.

Functional Healing isn't just about exercises... it's about noticing the little things before they become big things.

Sometimes healing isn't another stretch or another workout... sometimes it's simply moving the dehydrator tray six inches closer πŸ™„

And I think the tomatoes taste better when you aren't in pain!
