Bengkung Belly Binding 101
A Sacred Tradition of Postpartum Care

One of the services I offer as a Postpartum Doula is Bengkung Belly Binding—a traditional method used for centuries across cultures to support healing after birth.

Benefits include:
• Shrinking the uterus naturally
• Repositioning internal organs
• Supporting core & lower back
• Improving posture
• Easing postpartum anxiety through gentle compression

Historically, Granny midwives and traditional birth workers from around the world practiced belly binding as part of holistic postpartum healing. From the American South to Southeast Asia, wrapping the belly was seen as both ritual and remedy—a way to honor the mother’s transformation.

Often paired with massage using sesame or castor oil, this practice nurtures the body and spirit in the early weeks of motherhood.

When to begin:
• Vaginal births: as early as Day 1 postpartum
• C-sections: after 10–12 days, once the incision has healed

Binding is most effective up to 12 weeks postpartum, but you can continue as long as it serves you.

I can offer this as a hands-on service—or teach you how to do it yourself in the comfort of your home.

Let’s reconnect with this ancient wisdom. Your healing deserves to be honored.

Mastitis is tough—but so are you, mama.

Whether it’s caused by a blocked duct or poor latch, there are gentle, natural ways to prevent and treat it—like warm compresses, massage, castor oil packs, and cabbage leaves. Blood in milk can be normal, but if it lasts over a week, it’s time to check in with your care provider.

Postpartum doulas are an incredible support—helping you spot early signs, improve latch, and care for your body through it all.

You were never meant to do this alone.

The foods we eat during pregnancy and postpartum are powerful—not just for our own healing, but also for supporting a healthy milk supply. Nutrient-dense options like organ meats are rich in iron, B12, choline, and essential minerals that directly nourish both you and your baby.

Now, I know most people don’t get excited about the idea of eating liver or kidney (and that’s okay!). Thankfully, organ meats are available in capsule form for those who’d rather skip the taste. If that’s not in the budget, you can still get the benefits by sneaking them into dishes like meatballs, meatloaf, or stews. Your body (and your baby) will thank you!

Greetings to the birth worker community and to the mamas and families that I will be working with in the future 🪷

My name is Shelby, thank you for being here.

I was called to work in the maternal & birth realm after having the privilege of supporting my own aunt through labour. The high of that experience drove me to immediately register for a doula course; I chose Mama Glow as my school. I loved the tone and nature of the founder behind the course, but most of all I loved that there was a profound focus on advocacy for minorities. I am always open to learning how to better support and advocate for underprivileged individuals, whilst using the privilege that I carry to serve and break down the barriers that separate individuals from accessing the best care possible. Curiosity and hunger to learn guides me, while gratitude grounds me.

There is so much ancestral knowledge that has been lost with the hyper-medicalization of birth, and that isn’t to be negative about our HC system (We are very privileged to access public care in Canada) but we truly need to bring back empowering mothers and allowing women to have autonomy over their body and their birth experience; consent is good, but informed consent with all options on the table is best.

I believe your birth story can be just as intimate as conception, and if an or****ic birth sounds unrealistic; I’m here to break down the notion that birth is inherently dangerous or risky. In fact; I think what is MORE dangerous and risky to our communities and to mothers is not having the support required through these rapidly transformative moments of our lives.

“Speak life into your womb, let your lotus bloom”
