Don’t rely too much on any one study.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder to take a moment for ourselves when we're stressed. Our natural threat response can often lead to fight (self-criticism), flight (isolation), and freeze (rumination). But self-compassion offers a powerful antidote.

By practicing kindness, mindfulness, and connecting with our shared humanity, we downregulate the threat system and activate the care system (the tend and befriend response), reducing stress and fostering resilience.

Research shows that this shift into self-compassion can lower cortisol levels and increase heart rate variability, making us less defensive, calmer, and more balanced.

This month, let’s prioritize mental well-being and show ourselves the kindness we need. Take a pause, place your hand on your heart, and remind yourself that you are worthy of care and compassion.

None of these cost anything, and that’s exactly why they get overlooked.

We’re so used to thinking healing requires a supplement, a protocol, or a $200 device that we forget the fastest reset available to us is usually free and already in front of us.

A hum, a yawn, five minutes outside.

These aren’t small things. They’re direct lines to your vagus nerve, and your body is built to respond to them.

Save this one for the next time you’re spiraling and don’t know where to start. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Which of these is missing from your week right now?

Hate is learned. It's Pride Month and I want to celebrate and embrace our LGBTQIA+ community this month and always.

Maybe you're already here or maybe you find this on your explore page. My biggest dream is for all children to be accepted for who they are. We should WANT them to be who they are and LOVE them for who they are. And we should raise kids who celebrate differences and have respect for all: regardless of skin color, religion, neurodiversity, sexual identity, and everything in between.

Our differences are what make us beautiful. And being loved unconditionally by a trusted caregiver is the most beautiful gift of all.

Whether a caregiver is accepting of their LGBTQIA+ child or not, the child will continue to identify as who they are. Your acceptance or lack thereof doesn't change their reality. But your acceptance and love changes how safe they feel to be themselves around you. And every child deserves to feel safe.

As a pediatrician, a mom, and a person who wants more love and less hate in this world, I'm sending love and support to our LGBTQIA+ community today and every day.

May you feel love and acceptance from those closest to you. May you feel supported in education and healthcare. May we continue to vote for legislators who fight for equity. May you feel safe.
We need to send more love into this world and raise children with love and self-worth. Part of that is celebrating them for who they are and teaching them to do the same for others.

And if this resonates with you, my free newsletter is where I go deeper on topics like this, including child development, mental health, raising emotionally healthy kids, and the pediatric and parenting conversations that don't always fit in a caption. Comment NEWSLETTER below and I'll add you to the list.

Drop a heart if you are raising inclusive children.
