Do you want the good news or the bad news first?”

This is the final instalment in the series, where we see how the design holds up in real conditions.

After running the system in-season, some parts performed exactly as intended—cleaner flow, smoother movement, and a noticeable improvement in day-to-day efficiency.

Other elements didn’t land quite the way they were designed to once volume and timing were fully in play.

That said, we’re not rushing changes mid-season. With peak demand underway, the system will stay as-is for now. The refinements will be revisited and dialed in over the winter, when there’s room to adjust properly.

Josh walks through what held, what didn’t, and how it’s actually functioning on the ground right
now.

Have you ever seen this tool at work before?

It's something that we've been asked over and over and over—

"How can you move these big trees? They must all die!"

In a word? Process.

No cut corners, taking care of the root ball, and doing it the right way.

Here's Josh with the full breakdown.

Here’s a first look at the automated press for seedling production that we’ve been teasing over the past several months.

This system represents a long-term investment in the future of our farm: growing stronger, healthier plant material from the very beginning of the lifecycle, entirely in-house.

In this video, we’re focusing on the purpose behind the assembly and the role it plays in the bigger picture of our operation.

Soon, we’ll walk through the machine itself — what’s working well, what isn’t, and how the entire process comes together from start to finish.

Stay tuned.

Coming up in today’s video:

“If you’re in the local market and you actually want to find folks that have the knowledge, have the history, have the inventory, have the tried and true varieties, have locally grown, prairie hardy, acclimated plant material, check out a local supplier. They’re fantastic!”

FHN has been rooted in Alberta since the 70's. Built for where we live. Our experience makes us uniquely positioned to provide beautiful, viable plant material for your projects.

“We want to be a business that is known for how we serve.”

That starts with our team. It’s why this day is always circled; it’s a time to connect, sharpen our standards, and have some fun before the season ahead.

As the closest production nursery to Calgary, we always appreciate when architects reach out to align plant material with the specific needs of their projects.

When you connect with a local grower:

🌱 You see what actually thrives
🌿 You understand what’s available
🔍 You gain insight into how it’s grown and tested

As our city continues to expand, the need to steward our urban canopy has never been greater.

When architects and designers work directly with local growers, we can collaborate with intention and invest in a greener future.
