Here’s how to achieve a deep latch! 👇

‼️ Not every baby will know how to latch deeply right away…a lot of structures and movements have to work simultaneously to ensure the proper latch so it’s no wonder this is such a common challenge.

A few signs of a good, deep latch are an extended neck where your baby’s chin is tilted upwards and digging into the breast. The nose should be away from the breast…they’ve got to be able to breathe right? 🤪

Here’s how to achieve a comfortable 😁, deep latch:

✅ Line baby up so that their chin is touching your breast and your ni**le is right under their nose, *not* pointed straight at their lips. When baby opens their mouth they will be able to come up & over your ni**le.

✅ You want to tilt your baby’s chin upward and bury it in the breast. Their chin should be pressed up right against your breast. Chin digging in, nose away.

✅ Snuggle baby’s chest & shoulders in so that their neck is able to extend. You may need to tug baby down a bit by their feet to really get that head tipped back into “howl at the moon” position!

I always tell parents that fixing a painful newborn latch is 95% what the parent does and 5% the baby opening their mouth at the right time. A lot 😮‍💨 goes into the “perfect” latch and 🤱 positioning, but these are two things that can really go a long way and help you and your baby having a successful (and comfortable) breastfeeding session. 🫶
