Why decision making burns energy!

We all think of energy being used when we do something physically active like go to the gym, for a run, a hike or running after a small child that just won’t settle down….

But energy is used in multiple ways in the body. One of the most physically exhausting things you can do is make decisions. Have you ever had that moment at 5pm where everyone in the house needs feeding, there is food available in the house, but you just can’t think what to make?

Yeah…. Been there - and i’m a nutritionist!!

Every decision your brain makes requires communication between brain cells, and one of the main neurotransmitters involved in that process is glutamate.
The more stimulation, stress, multitasking and decision making… the more glutamate activity the brain has to manage.

And that process is energy demanding.

This is one reason chronic stress can leave you feeling mentally exhausted, overwhelmed and “wired but tired.”

Sometimes the problem isn’t laziness.

Sometimes the brain has simply been “on” for too long.

But counting calories is the only way to be slim…..

Do you know how many times I’ve had to bust this myth?? Yes, I get it! We have heard it a million times over, be in a calorie deficit.

But being in a calorie deficit overlooks the amount of nutrients from various foods that we need, In 2015 I was in a permanent calorie deficit, I was living on 1200 calories a day when my BMR was 1342. I worked out 4 days a week for an hour and I kept gaining weight.

So, this is not me speaking just as a clinical nutritionist, this is me speaking as someone who has experienced the struggle of doing everything right just to get the opposite outcome of what I wanted. I was battling all day every day, I had no energy, I had brain fog, I had joint pain and I was miserable!! All this to hit a certain number on a scale because society told me I needed to be a number to be worthwhile.

It was only when I found out the root cause of why I was constantly gaining weight that I managed to sort myself out and believe me it had nothing to do with calorie counting, in fact when I started eating more, that’s when the weight dropped off. 

I found out what was wrong, reduced inflammation, rebalanced by gut which in turn rebalanced my hormones. I supported my body with nutrient density and figured it all out. It took me years and a degree in nutritional science but now that I understand it all - that’s what I do for you.

I remove the confusion, figure out why your body is not responding, help you understand your body and help you nourish it!

My client thought she was doing everything right…. And she was….

When I looked at her food diary and how much she worked out, she was eating whole foods regularly with good timing, doing crossfit 3 times a week and still gaining weight.

We had to find out why!! We used clinical analysis and functional testing to get to the root cause of what was happening and in the last year she has lost 40lbs in weight, has more energy, her acne cleared up, her digestive system improved, she felt more like herself again.

I don’t give standard plans, I find out why you’re struggling in the first place and then go from there!!

This one’s for the Moms.

Whether you’re a stay at home mother or you go out to work every day, life with kids is insane - there are ALWAYS 3 million things to do.

I went back to school when my son was only 18 months old in order to study nutrition and help my kids get better from their chronic health conditions and now I run a business where I help other people with their chronic and complex health conditions - so when I’m say I know what it’s like, I truly do.

So here are some easy things to make nutrition fit into your life so that you can have more energy to do the things you need to do.

1. Always have healthy snack bars - RX bars, GO macro bars, Larabars - these are whole food bars that keep me going and can be thrown in my bag so that I can keep going through the day.
2. Everything I run out of I just add it to my shopping cart on my app where I do groceries and on the day before I want to pick it up I select a time that’s easy for me to do click and collect - no more going into the store for groceries
3. Cook double the amount of food that I need every time I cook so that I have leftovers
4. A stocked pantry - tinned fish, quinoa, brown rice pasta, nuts, seeds, dried fruit

Let’s stop making everything so hard on ourselves!! And Happy Mothers Day!

Recently, a client said something to me that really stuck…

She told me that after five years of talk therapy, she finally started to feel a real shift in her mental health when we started working on her nutrition.

And it wasn’t because she hadn’t done the work, she had.

And it wasn’t because therapy doesn’t work, it does.

But what we uncovered was that she had underlying PCOS and food sensitivities that had never been addressed.

So even though she was doing all the emotional work… her body was still under constant internal stress.
And that was affecting her mood, her anxiety, and how she felt day to day.

When we started addressing that...supporting her body and reducing that stress, everything started to change.

Her mood stabilised, her anxiety reduced, and things finally felt like they were clicking.

This is why I always say… mental health isn’t just about your thoughts...it’s about what’s happening in your body too.
