Excited day on the land today!
While exploring, I was thrilled to come across some wild gooseberry plants. Discoveries like this remind me why I'm so passionate about food forests and reconnecting with Mother Earth.
A food forest is nature's grocery store—trees, shrubs, berries, herbs, and plants all growing together, providing food, medicine, habitat for wildlife, and healthier ecosystems. The more we learn about what grows naturally around us, the more food security, food sovereignty, and self-reliance we can create for ourselves and future generations.
Every walk on the land is an opportunity to learn, connect, and be reminded of the abundance all around us.
What treasures have you discovered in nature lately?

Another productive day on the homestead! 🌱🏡
Today i finally got the greenhouse set up and moved all the transplants out of the basement and into their new home.
After spending the last couple of weeks under lights in the basement, they'll now spend a couple more weeks in the greenhouse hardening off before making their final journey into the garden. It's always exciting to watch the process unfold—from seed, to sprout, to greenhouse, and eventually to the dinner table.

One thing that's really catching my attention this year is how different the season seems compared to last year. Around this time last year, I was already out harvesting spruce tips. This year, they haven't even started to pop yet. It just goes to show how much Mother Nature works on her own schedule.
We'll have to keep our eyes open over the next little while and see what she has in store for us. Every year is different, and that's part of the beauty of living close to the land.
The chicks are thriving, the greenhouse is full, and the garden season is well underway. Lots of work ahead, but so much to be thankful for.
Food security. Food sovereignty. Self-reliance. One step at a time.
Wela'lin, Mother Earth, for another season of learning and abundance. 🌿💚

🐥 One-Week Baby Chick Check-Up! 🐥

One week in, and I'm happy to report that all is well on the homestead! 😊
All 30 chickies have made it through their first week healthy, active, and growing fast. It's amazing to watch them thrive and see their little personalities starting to shine through.

Every step of this journey is another step toward food security, food sovereignty, and becoming a little more self-reliant. Knowing where your food comes from and being part of the process from the very beginning is both rewarding and empowering.

Before long they'll be out enjoying fresh air, scratching around the yard, and helping us build a more sustainable future right here on the homestead.

So far, so good—healthy chicks, happy homestead, and lots to be thankful for! 🌱🐥❤️

What a wonderful day of foraging!
After spending the day on the land gathering some of Mother Nature's bounty, I settled in this evening to a 100% organic, wild-harvested meal. On the menu was the last of last year's mackerel, potatoes I dug up this spring, fresh ostrich ferns (fiddleheads) picked today, green onions, sun-dried tomatoes, and a healthy serving of dandelion greens.
Talk about food security, food sovereignty, and knowing exactly where your food comes from. Not only is this food delicious, but it's packed with nutrients. Mackerel is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiddleheads provide antioxidants and minerals, dandelion greens are loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, and potatoes offer a great source of energy and fiber.
It's meals like this that remind me how fortunate we are to live in a place where the land and sea continue to provide. Summer is just around the corner, and I can't wait to see all the fresh foods and medicines that will be popping up over the coming weeks.

To top it all off, I'll be washing it down with a warm cup of dandelion tea — a perfect way to end an amazing day on the land.
Wela'lin, Mother Earth, for your abundance. 🌿🐟🍽️☕

What a beautiful day in Bay St. George!

Spent some time on the land today with my buddy harvesting some fresh ostrich ferns, better known as fiddleheads

Not only are fiddleheads delicious, but they’re also packed with nutrients. They contain vitamins A and C, are a good source of manganese, and provide antioxidants and fiber that help support overall health.

A friendly reminder: fiddleheads should always be cleaned well and parboiled or boiled before cooking. This helps remove any naturally occurring compounds that can cause stomach upset if eaten raw or undercooked.

Days like this remind me of the importance of food sovereignty and food security. Healthy, nutritious foods are growing all around us if we take the time to learn, harvest respectfully, and reconnect with the land.

Wela'lin, Mother Earth, for another day of abundance. 🌿💚

🐥 Day 2 on the homestead!
The little chickies made it through their first night and everyone is looking great this morning. They're off to a wonderful start, eating, drinking, and settling into their new home.
It's always exciting to take another step toward food security, self-reliance, and knowing exactly where your food comes from. Looking forward to sharing this journey with everyone as these little ones grow.

Wela'lin to everyone following along on this homestead adventure! 🌱🐔

Another beautiful day on the homestead. 🐥🌱
Spent the day looking after the chickies, doing some transplants, and taking a little break for lunch — and what a lunch it was!
Moose burgers with homegrown onions, sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil, homemade pickles, fresh dandelion greens, and fireweed on the side with garlic butter. Absolutely amazing. 🙌
Moments like this make me so thankful. This is what food security and self-reliance look like. Knowing where your food comes from, growing and gathering it yourself, eating healthy, organic foods from the land — there’s truly nothing better.
The more we reconnect with the land, the more we reconnect with ourselves. 🌿
