Botany In A Day:
A Field Guide to Plant Families of North America
by Thomas J. Elpel

As we come into spring and the flowers are making a show, what better time than now to talk about plant ID? Flowers are, after all, a really easy place to start.

So, if youre a beginner and want to learn how to properly identify plants, increase you confidence and understand plant patterns - this book is DEFINITELY for you.

Even as someone who has had several years of formal schooling for plant ID, I find this book is a wonderful compliment and extremely helpful.

What to expect and why I love it:
🌷From the start, Thomas guides you step by step, how to use and get the most out of his guide.
🌷He explains the proper terms in ways anyone can understand - brand new or seasoned
🌷COLOUR! We all love the detailed, coloured plant pictures to help us compare to the real thing
🌷Key characteristics and patterns of plant families
🌷If you are extra nerdy (like me!) there is wonderful breakdowns, pictures and explanations of plant parts and how they relate to ID (like cones, seed pods/fruits)
🌷Quick little, but important, descriptions of the families and species that can be found in our region.
🌷He doesnt go into depth on usability in a medicinal sense, but does mention/summarize where it counts.

I love this one and definitely reccomened it to anyone looking to expand their ID knowledge especially if you want to wildcraft. Proper ID is SO SO important!

So. Ive been feeling a pull towards roses lately and am trying some new things. Here is the first round result of one of the trial runs.

Rose Petal Whipped Tallow

🌹Beef tallow infused for at least 8 hrs with organic rose petals
🌹Rosehip seed oil
🌹Vitamin E oil
🌹Rose absolute essential oil

The result - silky smooth tallow, with a hint of rose. Not over the top but quietly nourishing.

If you'd like to pre order - please let me know right away. I have a very limited supply. I am working on the details for this first small batch to be officially available in a week or so.

The good stuff takes time. 🥰🌹
More to come? We shall see. 😊

*Note - these tins are 30mL as opposed to my usual 60mL.

How beautiful is this 🌹 rose 🌹coloured dropper bottle?! Special things things are coming. 🥰

Yes, I am still creating, still selling all the things, and will be starting at the Stettler Farmers Market in a couple of weeks - stay tuned! Stettler District Agricultural Society

As always, if you need anything in the mean time, please reach out! Or pop over to Vintage Thistle to sneak a peek at a few of my products and all things glorious there! More will be changing up as well - fresh batch of Swat Team (bug deterrent) will be arriving in the coming weeks.

Proper plant creations take patience and are well worth the wait! (But it's not always a win... can be a learning experience too. 😅)

🧁🌱Nettle Dandelion Cupcakes🌱🧁

This recipe takes a bit of preparation so make sure you have time, its a great field trip/baking forage day!

🌱 Gather 100g of stinging nettle tops (original recipe says 30 tops, I AT least doubled that and then some. If theres extra just dry them for tea!) You want to take the top portion of the nettle, about 6-8 leaves.
🌱 Gather 15g of dandelion blossoms (approx 20, but again, its ok to overshoot, you can dry the petals out and use them later for other things)
🌱 Preheat oven to 325F
🌱 Wash and steam nettle for 4-5 mins
🌱 Transfer to ice water, strain and squeeze as best you can.
🌱 Puree in a blender the steamed nettle with about 1-1/4cup (300g) milk of choice. (I used whole) And 1.5 Tbsp of lemon juice
🌱 In a bowl combine 3/4 cup + 3tbsp of raw honey with the zest of 2 small lemons (or to taste prefrence)
🌱 Add the nettle mix in the honey/lemon and 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (or vegetable oil of choice). Stir.
🌱 Stir in 2-1/2 Cups flour, 2 tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp baking soda with a pinch of salt
🌱 Once well combine, fold in dandelion petals.
🌱 Fill cupcake pan (I just buttered the cups, didnt use liners but you can) 3/4 to the top and bake for 20mins (I used convection bake), checking with a toothpick, it should come out clean.

Allow to cool completely before topping with your favourite icing! I went all out and made vanilla buttercream...which undoubtedly added a bunch of calories. 😁

Some notes:
🏵Be sure to separate the dandelion petals from the green bits (sepal) or you'll end up with bitter taste profile and the petals wont spread well through the batter.

🏵I used honey in place of Castor sugar. The original recipe calls for 300g (approx 1-1/2 cup) I converted to honey - which also reduced my bake temperature. If you decide to use sugar - granulated is fine or other types - you may want to increase temperature to 350F. Keep an eye on your goods during baking!

🏵 I saved the green bits from the dandelion and made a tincture with 40% Vodka. This is optional. I just didn't want to dump them out but compost is always an option!

🏵The cupcakes were SO delicious, moist and just a lovely un. I ended up with 16 total in the end.

🏵As always, forage in clean, chemical free areas with LOTS of plants. Don't take more than you need and be respectful. Happy foraging (and baking!)

You'll never guess what Im making with these fresh nettle tops and dandelion flowers. 👀

Wait for it....

Cupcakes!

I'll share the results and recipe soon. I am just glad I made it out before it started to rain. 😅

Note on foraging nettle tops: youre going to get stung. It's just how it goes. 🤷‍♀️ Wear gloves if you want to cut back the chances, I find the fresh spring top growth not as agressive as once the nettle gets larger (when i DO wear gloves 😆)

Nettle:
🌱 SUPER nutrient rich. We are talking vitamins, minerals & phytonutrients for overall health
🌱 Can support you if you suffer from allergies like hayfever
🌱Cardiovascular system support
🌱 Women's overall health support

Dandelion flowers:
🏵 Contain lots of vitamins and minerals
🏵 Liver support
🏵 Full of antioxidants
🏵 Support digestive health

Just to name a few!
How do you use dandelion blossoms or spring nettle tops?

🏵 Dandy tricks! 🏵
It's dandelion blossom season and sometimes the effort of separating the flowers from the sepal is a bit labor intensive and hard on the fingers.

Here's a handy trick I learned - pinch, twist, pull.

Pinch the green bits (sepal) and the petals, twist and pull. Voila, your petals are mostly green-bit free, you can now use them ASAP or dry them out slowly as they are. Once the petals are separated they "shouldnt" turn to fluff. 😅

Don't throw the green bit out! The bitter parts can be used in tinctures.

Petals can be used for teas, mead, wine, jelly, dandelion honey, salves and my favorite- baking!

What do you use your dandelion petals for?

Usnea aka Old Man's Beard
"Usnea sp"

I have not yet had the pleasure to work with usnea on a herbalism level, but I found quite a load of it on our hike in Athabasca recently. (They have beautiful trails if you've never been!)

Usnea is a very special lichen - they occupy a unique niche. They thrive only in areas where air quality is prestine enough to support their delicate symbiosis. They indicate clean air and a thriving ecosystem!

Im confident, upon gently taking some to ID, that it is, in fact a species of beloved usnea. The give away with these lovely lichen is when you gently pull them apart they have a white elastic core. It looks like a little while string at the center. They also attach to branches at a single point, they dont spread along the bark like other lichen. There are different species that can vary in colour and "texture" - but, as always, be 100% sure of your ID but using reliable resources, as there are look alikes!

I did NOT take any today, as I am not in a space I can safely harvest and process it properly and honorably. Just because it's there does not mean we should take it. 😉 I found it quite lovely and humbling just to spend time admiring the beauty of what nature provides!

Usnea traditionally known for
🌾 Supporting the immune system
🌾 Respiratory system support
🌾 Cooling and drying energetic with an affinity for the lung and liver meridians

Have you spotted this treasure in the trees?

Everything is coming up roses.🌹
Taking my time today with this one, we shall see how it turns out.

Slow and steady, I'm trying a double infusion of roses into tallow. If anything, it might just be the start of something bigger.

Haha! I may need a this shirt. 😆
