Many people who live with a disability struggle to find work.

The reasons mentioned above are just some of the difficulties that impact disabled people looking for work. These issues are often pushed under the rug, but by educating others we can start to bring action towards breaking down this issue.

Unfortunately, this is the reality of people with disabilities because of the negative stigmas and biases people have.

As an employer it is vital to do your part and take action that will result in a positive outcome not just for your bottom line but also the team culture.

As we continue to experience the adverse effects of COVID-19, it is interesting to note how the pandemic is impacting various sectors and people. It has taken us by surprise that there is almost a 20% decrease in disabled workers that are employed, despite the pandemic normalizing the accommodations some disabled workers require.

Using words like courageous, brave, inspirational when describing a person with a disability will most likely do more harm than good. While this usually comes from good intentions it isn’t received in that way because it is demeaning the person with a disability.

If there are 2 people that both achieve their MBA, one with a disability and one without, you might say “you are so inspirational” to the person with the disability and “that’s a great achievement” to the person without.

But why is there a difference in how you congratulate them, they both achieved the same thing? It is important to remember that a person with a disability is not suffering from their disability, rather they are proudly living with it.

Please keep in mind you should not be highlighting the fact that someone has a disability, rather highlight what they have accomplished.

To a person who lives with a disability, the term normal doesn't resonate because people with disabilities do things based on how they see the world and their actions are a byproduct of that.

It is so important to recognize that there are different ways to get a final destination, regardless of how society seems to categorize this.

Our favourite tip from this is asking users for their preferred mode of communication! It is so important to create an atmosphere in which everyone feels comfortable and welcomed and this is a great way to do it.

These tips are a great practice to maintain, regardless of whether or not you know someone with low vision will be viewing this content. This makes it easier for all individuals to process and understand the information you are putting out.
