How bizarre is it that “aging naturally” is seen as a bold act of rebellion. That simply looking like yourself has become brave.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I believe we all have the autonomy to do what we want with our bodies, and it makes complete sense that we’d feel pressure to secure our “value” in a more youthful appearance.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And at the same time, there’s a lot of peace in remembering that it’s an option, not an obligation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Aging is a privilege that not everyone gets. And it’s possible to heal not only from the grief of a changing body, but from the belief that your worth diminishes as you age, because it genuinely doesn’t.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Your discomfort is trying to tell you something.

You don’t need another diet, peptides, or Ozempic. You need to start questioning the way you’ve been measuring your worth in the first place.

How? By learning how to separate your worth from your body.

Start by asking yourself:
1. What do I actually need right now?
2. What brings me to life outside of how I look?
3. Do I really need to love my body to live a grounded, meaningful life?

The internet’s blowing up over Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway “aging like fine wine.” And calling it “balance, wellness, and continuous skin care.”

Meanwhile, the picture of aging in our minds gets more and more skewed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And the media’s messaging makes women believe it’s a poor choice to “allow” aging to happen.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is how body dysmorphia gets fed:
—comparison content that looks like a compliment
—gaslighting people into thinking “if you have better skincare, you’ll age better”
—glamorizing what money, surgeons, and lighting can do and calling it “wellness and grace”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you don’t need more botox.

Maybe you need to unsubscribe from the idea that your body is a problem capitalism and the patriarchy invented so they could sell you a solution.

Gaining weight was the exact thing I’d spent my whole life trying to avoid. It also turned out to be one of the best things that’s ever happened to me

I remember trying on dresses in a change room and not recognizing the body I saw in the mirror. I left so upset, texting my friend how I felt, and she validated something for me: “women are taught that their value lies within their physical appearance.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I felt gross. I was astonished at how quickly the changes happened. I felt unlovable and insignificant because I had based so much of my confidence on getting lean.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’d spent my entire life, since I was 6 years old, believing I wasn’t good enough in my natural body. And spent 20 years trying to change it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And I couldn’t go back. Restrictive dieting didn’t align with the life I wanted anymore. So weight gain did what nothing else could… It forced me to face the insecurity I’d been outrunning for over two decades.

I’m not anti-weight loss. I’m anti-“weight loss will fix how I feel about myself.”
