The PYNK program, the first of its kind in Canada, was created by an interdisciplinary team of physicians specializing in cancer care, oncology nurses, a clinical psychologist with extensive experience counseling young women with breast cancer, and a group of young breast cancer survivors. Its aim is to address the special clinical, psychological, research and educational needs of young women with

breast cancer. Women diagnosed before the age of 40 may have young children and families to care for, be concerned with preserving their fertility, suffer more from side effects of treatment, and suffer more acutely socially and psychologically. To address these needs, patients in the PYNK program and their families receive a continuum of care from the time of diagnosis through treatment and follow-up. The needs of each individual and her family are assessed by the program’s nurse coordinator who acts as a navigator, escorting patients through the process of treatment and recovery, and connecting them with the appropriate specialists and resources

Research is a key feature of PYNK . Women in the program are offered participation in numerous clinical trials aimed to advance our knowledge about prevention, screening, treatment and supportive care of young women with breast cancer. In addition, the health care professionals involved in PYNK are strongly committed to raising awareness of the unique needs of young women with breast cancer among health care professionals, thereby improving the care of those women who for geographic or other reasons are unable to join our program.
