Within Ayurveda, a sister science to Yoga and considered the science of life, this time of year is  the kapha time.  Kapha is earthy and damp, cool and slow. Imagine all the tiny seeds that have been frozen in the ground for many (many) months now gently awakening.

A major frustration to anyone living in the northern hemisphere and in particular those that deal with harsh winters, is the patience required through spring. But patience is what is most needed at this time. No matter how many times you stare at those tiny seedlings bursting through the earth, you can’t make them grow. We have no control over the weather, but yet every single year without fail, the summer arrives and the flowers all bloom.

To embrace kapha energy we need to embrace the slowness, we need patience, but we also need to continue to gently forge ahead. This is a powerful time for space clearing both physical and energetically. When our journaling and meditations can help us start to break out of the fog and into the light.

I am grateful for this time myself, as I am ready, but not quite ready at the same time to dive back in to all the things. I want to stay connected with what is most important to me, and where my light truly shines and spend my time there, in that space. I am working on filling my cup back up and slowly I am coming back to the light.

A note to check in 💕 - https://mailchi.mp/sanghayogacollective/checkingin This fall has been intense and also beautiful. I’ve been forced to slow down and simplify and certainly bring my yoga practice into every moment. My mom has been in the hospital for three months now, which is where most of my attention has been directed to. Started with a fall and just as she was about to be discharged, developed pneumonia that landed her in the ICU where she has been since October 1st. (follow the link to read more)..

Yoga is not something you DO, it’s an experience. We arrive in the state of Yoga, which is when the mind is clear of clutter. This is directly from the Sutras of Patanjali (1:2), one of the foundational texts on Yoga.

And sure, we can arrive there through asana, but that is only 1 of the 8 limbs. Asana as we have come to know it through Astanga, or hot power yoga, or even Yin or Restorative Yoga are newer (less than 100 years old), despite evidence of Yoga being closer to 6000 years old.

This is why Yoga Foundations is a 100% theory based course. We need to understand, realize, and experience the state of Yoga so we can begin to understand Yoga’s true power.

How to Begin a Meditation Practice

Step #1 – Sit down, close your eyes, quiet your mind.

The hard truth is that is really what you need to do. The reality, as we know, it’s not quite that simple. If you have been wanting to start a meditation practice or have been struggling to stay committed, try working with the following tips.

1. Be comfortable.

Over time it will become more comfortable to sit for longer periods as your back and hips get used to it. Until that happens, get a good quality meditation cushion or even a firm dĂŠcor pillow or extra yoga mat. Sit on the edge so that your hip bones tip slightly forward. If your legs start to cramp, move and re-adjust. Again, as your body gets used to sitting it will get easier over time.

2. Schedule it in.

Let’s be honest with ourselves on what it takes to get things done these days. You schedule coffee with your BFF weeks in advance, so schedule your daily (yes – I said daily) meditation. Find a minimum of 10 minutes (working up to 20) everyday, preferably at the same time. Use an alarm, write it in your diary, whatever it takes to keep you accountable.

3. Get help.

Why try it alone? There are incredible tools out there designed to help you be consistent with your meditation practice. Apps like Insight Timer are extremely popular, though there are many others. Remember, we have free meditations in the library section of our community app! If you find the silence deafening, or struggle to quiet your thoughts work with different techniques until you find what works best with you.

And the end of the day, consistency is key. There is also a reason it is called meditation PRACTICE. It needs to be practiced and it takes practice. I promise you, if you give it a solid effort you will experience its benefits: clarity, focus, presence, just to name a few; you will be hooked in for life.
