When someone justifies their diet or restrictive eating habits by claiming it's a lifestyle 🙄

Disclaimer: I did this for years. First with no refined sugar, then with veganism, then with "clean eating" and eliminating processed foods.

It's not a lifestyle, Karen. It's called restrictive eating.

Obsessively checking food labels to see how much sugar is in something.

Scanning ingredient lists to check for preservatives or "hidden ingredients".

Drinking only water because liquid calories are the devil.

Turning your nose up to anything that comes in a package.

Shopping only the perimeter of the store, because that's where the "real food" is (all food is real food, but whatever).

Denying yourself dessert because it's "empty calories".
..sorry to break it to you, but it's not a lifestyle.
IT'S RESTRICTION.

Stop glamourizing "clean eating". There's nothing glamourous about it.

In fact, it's a very exclusive "lifestyle" with barriers for many (financial, lack of access, time-consuming, etc). But that's a conversation for another day.

Most of us play small.

We have this *dream life* that we envision for ourselves, but we put it on the backburner for "one day".

We want to be that confident, sexy, gives no sh!ts woman who we know we are at our core... but we're "just not ready yet"... one day.

We want to be the morning meditator, the yogi, the one who starts their day with an unshakeable morning routine. But not right now. One day.

We want to be the one who can finally stop dieting, tracking every calorie, and stops criticizing their body. But we're not quite ready. One day.

We want to be the one who quits their soul-sucking job to travel, hopping from one beautiful destination to the next. But it's not the right time. One day.

The truth is... that one day will never come if you don't take action.

If you don't take the first step, that "one day" is going to be a fantasy you hold on to, a dream that you chase forever.

Stop dancing around the perimeter of the person you want to be.
Stop dancing around the life you want to have.

START taking an action (even a small one) everyday to get you closer to your dreams.

STOP DREAMING.
START DOING.

Whatever it is for you... just freakin' do it.

When it's the weekend & you don't have to worry about cheating on your diet because you broke up with diet culture 🙌🏽

Weekends used to terrify me.

No routine.
Last minute plans.
Dinners out.
Family events.
Unplanned snacks.
The inability to count & track macros.

It was my real life nightmare.

Now, I embrace the spontaneity that the weekends bring.
I'm the first one to suggest a dinner out, or having a wine & cheese night in.

The lack of routine doesn't scare me..... in fact, it liberates me.

I can now live my life totally FREE from the anxieties brought on by untracked meals.

I can now ENJOY my weekends.
And be present in them.

Weekends don't terrify me anymore.
They excite me.

And I can't tell you incredible that feels.

I used to think there was no way I could ever have true food freedom.

Not I live it everyday.

When I was obsessed with starving myself, it wasn't just my stomach that was empty.

My life felt empty.

My relationships were unfulfilled (I kept everyone at an arm's length).

As a result I felt isolated and misunderstood
I ran from new experiences & opportunities

I didn't use my voice for fear of rejection

I let the people around me make decisions for me

I fell into a miserable career that I hated

I felt disconnected from my body

I put my goals on the backburner

I denied myself vacations, nights out & social gatherings

I shut down potential new relationships

You cannot live a full life on an empty stomach.

You cannot possibly feel fulfilled when so much of your energy is channeled into food/eating and hating your body.

You just can't.

Food freedom has filled me up in ways I could have never imagined.

It has deeply affected & improved every area of my life.

My relationships.
My confidence.
How I carry myself.
How I advocate for myself.
The career I now have.
The experiences I've allowed myself.

I used to hide on my closet floor and eat TONS of food.
I'm talking POUNDS of food.
All at once.

As quickly as I could.

I wouldn't taste a thing. I didn't enjoy it.

I just ate it.

Compulsively.
Mindlessly.
Without thinking.

Feeling so disconnected from my body.

For a second, I'd think to myself
"You're going to regret this later..."
..but I always seemed to press mute on that voice, decide I'd deal with that later, & keep eating.

I'd be completely numbed out to my feelings.
It was a euphoric escape from reality.

In those moments, it was just me & the food.

I don't even think I breathed between bites, if I'm being honest.

But when the food was done, and I was left sitting on my closet floor surrounded by dozens of empty wrappers.....the euphoria dissipated.

Instead of me & the food,
it was now me & the shame....
& the guilt...
& the embarrassment...
& the self-disgust.

And that's what I remember more than anything.

The lowest of lows.

I am most at peace when I am...
..swimming in the ocean, 60 feet under the surface, hearing nothing but my own bubbles while watching all sorts of bizarre looking fish swimming over beautifully coloured reef. Everything is slow. Nothing is in a rush. It's all just perfect.
