The Sickle Cell Community once again presents our annual Mother's Day webinar.

This year we look at Empowering Caregivers: Navigating Access to Care for Sickle Cell Disease

Caregivers—especially mothers—are the unsung heroes in the fight against Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Their unwavering support is the backbone of patient care.

This Mother’s Day, we honor their strength, love, and courage. This special webinar will explore the critical issue of access to care for those living with SCD in Canada. We will unpack the challenges, share lived experiences, and identify practical solutions to ensure every person with SCD has the opportunity to thrive.

Join us on Saturday May 10th at 2:00 PM (EST) to hear Key Discussion on:

The role of healthcare systems in SCD care—how geography, clinic availability, and wait times affect patient access and outcomes.
Financial Barriers: A look at the economic toll of SCD—insurance gaps, medication costs, lost income, and financial aid programs.
Cultural and Social Barriers:How stigma, systemic bias, and cultural misunderstandings can create mistrust and inequity in care—and how we can bridge those gaps.
Health Outcomes: Understanding how consistent, quality care impacts long-term outcomes such as life expectancy, pain management, and mental health.

We are excited this year to be joined by 3 amazing panelists, 2 of which we have not heard from before. We are joined by Judy Grandison, President of Camp Jumoke and a Warrior Mom, Lesley-Anne Spence, Warrior Mom and Kai Gordon, Warrior Mom. They all have children either entering the transition stage or leaving it and have a lot of input on said matter.

Volunteers needed for camp!

This summer, Camp Jumoke has now partnered with Campfire Circle to continue the long-standing tradition of offering a week of summer overnight camp to children with sickle cell disease.

Representation matters, and we are looking for Black mentors and role models aged 19 and older to support the camp session and make a big impact on the lives of children living with this life-altering disease.

In the lives of those battling chronic diseases such Sickle Cell, our mothers often serve as our unwavering caregivers from the moment we arrive in this world. They offer not just warmth, comfort, and guidance, but also bear the weight of countless considerations as they tend to us, our siblings, manage the household, and look after their own well-being.

Join us Saturday, May 11, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM EST for our annual Sickle Cell Community Warrior Moms webinar.

We will delve into profound discussions with Kuda Regina M'schili Bempong, Sheila Merchant, and Biba Tinga, shedding light on the often overlooked challenges faced by mothers in sickle cell caregiving.

From navigating reproductive concerns to balancing careers, personal relationships, and the complexities of supporting us as young adults, they will share their experiences openly.

Join us as Alvin Merchant ask them the hard questions.

Ontario’s Only Camp for Children with Sickle Cell

Since 1994, Camp Jumoke has been a special place for children living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). We have sent well over 600 Canadian children to summer camp. For the families, the cost of camp represents an expense which is beyond their means. Camp Jumoke covers the cost to send each child to camp for two weeks each summer without funding from any level of government.
