I am so grateful to have learnt the work of Joseph Pilates from teachers who learnt from him and the students that followed after.

As a third generation teacher with 20 years of experience, I use his work to help people move better, stay vital and strong and recover from pain and illness.

The “classical” pilates work is not always accessible to those who have chronic pain, a compromised spine, is pregnant or has replacement parts…so adaptation is important.

But it’s important to know the depth of the work and his intentions behind each exercise before modifying the action.

This always informs my approach to teaching the work. What is the purpose of the exercise and what do I need to teach the client so they can perform it well?

I think there’s a bit of a misnomer that the classical work was only taught one way. In fact, Joe taught his work to so many diverse individuals that included singers, dancers, actors, acrobats and artists. So an exercise he created for one person may have been adjusted for another, depending on their abilities and activities they did.

That’s why you get a few variations of the “classical” work.

The most important thing when searching for a pilates studio is finding a teacher who will teach you how to move your body with the right intention…not just teach you an exercise.
