🔑 Front Entrance Accessibility
When we renovated our front entrance, we initially didn’t install a handrail. I thought it would look cleaner, more modern. At the time, it seemed like a small detail.
Then reality hit. Older relatives visited and struggled to get up the steps. And then, one day, I mistepped and fell.
As an Occupational Therapist, I should have known better — and I did. But like many people, I underestimated how important those “little” features are. A simple handrail could have made all the difference.
At Carney Occupational Therapy, we help families avoid these oversights. We provide comprehensive home safety assessments, focusing on practical, often overlooked areas like:
✅ Handrails on both sides of steps
✅ Non-slip surfaces and good lighting
✅ Step-free or ramped entries
✅ Wider doorways for mobility devices
Whether you’re planning ahead or reacting to a recent fall, the front entrance is one of the most important areas to address for safe, independent aging at home.
👣 Take it from someone who’s been there — small changes can have a big impact.
