Life has been a whole lot busier in the past year. Our family grew by two little feet, a few kilograms, and a whole lot of love.
Updating my resume:
- Experienced two very different births and postpartums
- Survived the two under 2 phase
- Able to manage multiple priorities
- Multitasker "mama" or "mommy" as my oldest now says
- Understanding a bit more what it is to be a mama.

Glad to see this important biomarker being understood as vital!

"It is important to note that the more typically measured biomarkers for thyroid function (T4 and TSH) are poorly linked to free T3 levels," said researchers.

Tips for staying well through a HEAT WAVE ☀️
- Reduce time outdoors, in direct sun and during the middle of the day. ☀️
- Slow down - our bodies don't function well at high temperatures. So be sure to take heat breaks! 🦥🐌🐢
- Hydrate - drink plenty of fluids, especially before feeling thirsty! Keep tabs on your urine colour - dark yellow is a sign you're not drinking enough.🍶
- Add electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, bicarbonates) to your water for balanced hydration. In a pinch, water + lemon/lime juice + Himalayan salt + honey/maple syrup OR coconut water can be a quick high-priority electrolyte drink. 🍋🧂🍯🥥🍹
- Incorporate more cooling foods into your diet - watermelon, apple, banana, strawberries, pineapple, radish, cucumber, zucchini, spinach, carrots, celery. Predominantly raw, uncooked veggies and fruit! 🍉🍎🍌🍓🍍🥒🥕
- Cool therapy (not cold) - from a cool pool to a damp, cool flannel cloth on wrists/forehead, there are many ways to cool down the body without shocking the body with temperature extremes. 🏊💦

Energy Cookies 🍪
Powerhouse of nutrition - great for pre/post workouts, afternoon pick-me-ups, breakfast on the go, toddlers, breastfeeding mamas and hardworking dadas. (My family can attest to all of these)
Ingredients:
-Fresh Medjool Dates
-Buckwheat Groats
-Quick Oats
-Nuts & Seeds (more variety, the better - walnut pieces, almond slice, sunflower seeds pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, sesame seeds, ground flaxseeds, etc)
-Raisins/Sultanas
-Shredded Coconut, unsweetened
-Cinnamon
-Vanilla
---------
+/- Cocconut manna/oil
Recipe:
1. Make the date paste - pit dates, and cut in half/quarters. Place in a bowl and cover with boiling hot water. Let soak them mash until smooth.
2. Cook buckwheat groats.
3. Combine date paste and buckwheat groats. Add vanilla and mix well.
4. Slowly add dry ingredients (oats, nuts & seeds, shredded coconut, raisins/sultans, and cinnamon) to wet ingredients while mixing. The "Goldilocks" step - not too much dry ingredients, but not leaving the mixture too wet and sticky.
5. IF your mixture is crumbly and dry, slowly add some coconut manna/oil to balance it out.
6. Roll into balls and flatten on a baking sheet. Bake at 350F for 15-20 minutes - just enough to make the edges lightly crusted.
Storing: fridge is best for up to a week. Freeze any extra in air-tight, freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months.

PSA for all Canadians - get your vitamin D levels tested!
We get the majority of vitamin D from the sun, and very little from our diet. The health benefits are widespread for adequate vitamin D nutrition. There is no better way to know you are getting enough without taking a look at your blood levels, and then supplementing accordingly. Most individuals are suboptimal or deficient when we investigate initially.

Diabetes diet: Vitamin D helps maintain healthy bones and immune system. This essential vitamin can help diabetics as well. Here's how.

1/2 cup smooth almond butter
2 Tbsp honey or maple syrup
1/4 cup cocoa powder

Boil sweet potatos and mash. Melt almost butter and maple syrup/honey over low/med heat until mixed well, then combine mashed sweet potatoes and cocoa powder. Transfer to pan lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350F for 30-40 minutes.

SWEET POTATO BROWNIES

These flourless, grain-free and gluten-free brownies are simply the best fudge-y ooey-gooey brownies I've ever had. I hope you love them too!! ⠀

Makes 16 brownies. ⠀

1 1/2 cups roasted cubed peeled sweet potato
2 eggs, whisked⠀
1/2 cup almond butter⠀
1/2-3/4 cup maple syrup (you decide how sweet :)⠀
1/2-3/4 cup almond or oat milk*⠀
1 cup raw cacao powder⠀
2 tsp baking powder⠀
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips⠀

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease an 8" square pan or line with parchment. ⠀

In a large bowl, mash sweet potato with a fork. Add eggs, almond butter, maple syrup and almond milk. In another bowl, combine raw cacao powder and baking powder. Add dry ingredients to the large bowl of wet ingredients, combine. Fold in chocolate chips. IMPORTANT: 🚨 The batter should be a brownie texture - thick but moist. Pour batter into pan.⠀

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until a fork inserted into the centre comes out clean. ⠀

*I have a range for the milk because if the batter seems dry, you'll need to add the full amount. It may be dry if the almond butter is dry. The inspo for this came from a recipe I posted on my blog from the Greenhouse Cookbook :) HAPPY BAKING friends 😊👍🏻⠀
