Are you covered under the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP)? Renew your coverage today! đź””

Today is the final day to renew your CDCP coverage for the 2026-2027 benefit year. The plan needs to be renewed every year to keep your dental coverage active and confirm your eligibility.

You can still submit your renewal before tonight’s deadline at 11:59pm ET, if you miss this deadline, your coverage will end on June 30, 2026. You will have to apply again, and there will be a gap in your coverage until the application is approved. Applications for the CDCP open starting tomorrow at 8am ET.

This plan helps make the cost of dental care more affordable for eligible people. You may be eligible if:

âś… You do not have access to private dental insurance or coverage
âś… You filed your tax returns for the previous year
âś… Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000
✅ You’re a resident in Canada for tax purposes

The Government of Canada has committed to building a barrier-free Canada by 2040. The National Disability Network’s (NDN) pre-budget joint submission provides recommendations for opportunities to move towards this goal in Budget 2026. 🌱

As a proud member of the NDN, we are collectively advocating to:

➡️ Legislate the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into Canadian law
➡️ Fund and create a new approach to federal disability eligibility
➡️ Develop, implement, and enforce a government-wide disability inclusion policy
➡️ Strengthen and increase the Canada Disability Benefit
➡️ Invest in accessible, inclusive, and affordable housing
➡️ Stabilize and increase funding for disability employment programs

Plan Institute, alongside the NDN, is committed to working with the federal government in advancing these priorities and to continue advocating for lasting impact. đź’š

📣 The government's Spring Economic Update included a number of proposals that impact people with disabilities, including some welcome changes to the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) application process and eligibility criteria.

Key proposals include:
- A new streamlined DTC process for certain medical conditions
- An expanded list of medical practitioners who can support the DTC application
- A streamlined process for those under the care of the Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT)

These measures are set to apply to DTC certifications from 2027 onwards.

đź”— See this summary from our partners at Disability Alliance BC which outlines all the disability-related updates to be aware of: https://bit.ly/4mYLXd0

We welcome any changes that reduce barriers to accessing the DTC and other vital financial programs. We hope that these adjustments are a starting point for more meaningful reform and redesign that ensures all people with disabilities can access the supports they are entitled to.

With the federal government’s Spring Economic Statement around the corner, we are focused on making the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) easier to access. 📣

A new report from the Canadian Tax Observatory outlines every step of the process—from getting a DTC certificate to actually seeing a valuable impact on income. 🌱

Read the full report to see a clear framework for which DTC reforms will truly help people, along with the data needed to measure their success.

A new research paper has been released today by the Canadian Tax Observatory on the barriers and challenges related to accessing and qualifying for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). We were happy to support it.

The report titled, Broken Links: Poverty and the Limits of the Disability Tax Credit, articulates very well the issues faced by people with disabilities. Authored by University of Calgary researcher Gillian Petit, it takes a detailed look at the DTC and its role in channeling support for those who need it most.

This is timely research as the federal government works to release its Spring Economic Statement next week. We encourage them to show a signal that they get it and that changes are required to the DTC.

The federal government has indicated it is open to reviewing the DTC—a welcome start, but not just nice to have. We now look forward to action.

The Canadian Tax Observatory intends to undertake more research to propose practical solutions to a problem that has persisted for decades.

We applaud this work and thank the Canadian Tax Observatory under the leadership of Heather Scoffield .
