The vagus nerve is essentially your body's built-in brake pedal on the stress response. When it's well-toned and active, it:

* Signals safety to your brain and body
Lowers cortisol and adrenaline quickly after stress
* Restores digestion, immune function, and sleep
* Enables social connection — it's directly tied to your ability to read faces, tone of voice, and feel bonded to others (Polyvagal Theory)
* Regulates inflammation throughout the body

Time to give some LOVE to our vagus nerve!! Here are a few ways to support our vagus nerve and reduce our stress levels!

🧘 Mind-Body Practices
Meditation — especially loving-kindness and mindfulness practices
Yoga — particularly poses with slow, conscious breathing
Prayer or repetitive chanting — the rhythmic, slow breathing involved is highly activating

🏃 Physical Activity
Aerobic exercise — improves vagal tone over time (measured by heart rate variability)
Massage — especially to the neck, ears, or feet
Acupuncture — some evidence for vagal stimulation

🥗 Gut Health (The Gut-Brain Axis)
Probiotics & fermented foods — about 80% of vagus nerve fibres run from the gut to the brain
Omega-3 fatty acids — support nerve health generally
Avoiding chronic overeating — reduces inflammatory signalling

😴 Lifestyle Foundations
Quality sleep — vagal tone is restored during deep sleep
Social connection & laughter — genuinely activates the parasympathetic system
Reducing chronic stress — prolonged cortisol suppresses vagal activity
