Canadian MPS Society 💙Supporting families affected by MPS and related rare diseases. Raising awareness helps create understanding and support for those living with MPS. What is MPS?

Sharing knowledge can make a meaningful difference for families navigating life with a rare disease.💜 Founded in 1984, The Canadian Society for Mucopolysaccharide and Related Diseases Inc. (The Canadian MPS Society) is committed to providing support to individuals and families affected with MPS and related diseases, educating medical professionals and the general public about MPS, and raising funds for research so that one day there will be cures for all MPS and related diseases. The Society is a registered charity governed by its Board of Directors with the support and expertise of its Medical Advisory Board. There are seven types of MPS syndromes, each one caused by a distinct, inherited enzyme deficiency. Upon birth, a child with MPS appears normal and will seem to develop normally for the first year or more, depending on the type of MPS they have. The first signs can vary and are evident at different ages in affected children. Symptoms that usually prompt medical attention include frequent ear infections, runny noses, and colds. The mucopolysaccharide storage disorders are progressive and vary widely in severity. MPS children tend to have coarse facial features and all of them have, to some degree, skeletal involvement. For most children this involves joint changes with limitation of movement. Children often have clouding of the cornea, leading to vision impairment. In all of the MPS disorders, multiple organs are involved. Enlargement of the liver and spleen and involvement of the heart and blood vessels are frequent symptoms. Other effects of MPS may include groin hernias, stunted growth, fluid on the brain, thickened skin, excessive hair growth, chronic runny nose, and chronic ear infections causing hearing loss. Some children will experience progressive neurological decline, depending on the type of MPS they have. Projected life expectancy averages ten to twenty years.

Special Spotlight!

As Hunter Syndrome Awareness Week finishes, get to know Ryan Hunt! 💜 Ryan lived with MPS II and was a proud member of the Canadian MPS Society. He lived in Nova Scotia and he lived in Iowa where he loved to fundraise for the Canadian MPS Society, National MPS Society, and the The Isaac Foundation! Ryan and his family worked hard to leave a legacy and to create awareness for MPS in his communities. Enjoy this post getting to know Ryan a little better!💙

Ryan sadly passed away in 2020 and is missed greatly by his family, friends, and the entire MPS community. His sister Jana even works at the Canadian MPS Society now.

If you or your child would like to have a special MPS spotlight, email us at [email protected]

This week is October is Hunter Syndrome Awareness Week! 💜

Project Alive started Hunter Syndrome Awareness Week last year and are fiercely advocating for Hunter Syndrome in the USA. Hunter syndrome is the 2nd type of MPS and affects males. It affects about 1 in 100,000 to 150,000 male babies. There is currently no newborn screening for MPS II in Canada and a treatment called Elaprase™ is available in Canada.

To learn more about Hunter Syndrome visit: https://www.mpssociety.ca/what-is-hunter-syndrome/ or visit Project Alive's website where you can learn more about advocacy, ways to get involved, and Hunter Syndrome Awareness Week: https://projectalive.org/advocacy

Today, October 10th, is World Mental Health Day. 💜

It is important to raise awareness about mental health issues and fight against social stigma. It's okay to reach out for help and it's okay not to be okay.

Living with MPS or being an MPS loved one can be very challenging and emotionally tolling. As an MPS sister (admin Jana here!), I often struggle with complex emotions and have very hard days surrounding MPS. But I take comfort in knowing that I am not alone and I appreciate the MPS community every single day for showing up for each other and being a strong support system for my family and I.

If you or a loved one are struggling with mental health, please reach out to your provinces crisis line or mental health supports.

At the Canadian MPS Society, we can also help:

💛Our family Facebook group, where individuals can connect with other families or individuals who can be a supportive presence.
💙Our WeCare Groups, we offer a bereavement and family/caregiver support group that meets monthly.
💜Or reach out to us anytime at [email protected] or [email protected]
