Hypothermia - a risk for all open water swimmers. Could this case study open up different avenues for research into this topic?
Cold adaptation helps to mitigate the signs and symptoms, and yes, it can be as simple as starting a cold exposure practice in the comfort of your own home.
Not everyone will swim in open cold waters, and everyone has a different journey with cold exposure.
If you do swim in open waters and are interested in the topic of hypothermia, there is quite a bit of research online available.
This particular case study of one male swimmer is definitely fascinating, maintaining an inner core temp of 33.88C at 2hrs42min (well below his starting temp of 37.9C) and keeping it there for another 6.5hrs without displaying "overt cognitive or motor impairment".
My guests and I have said it many times - more research is needed to better understand the physiological adaptations of the human body when swimming in cold water.
Now let's go swim in cold water to work safely on our cold adaptation..!
Marathon open-water swimming presents extreme thermophysiological challenges, particularly in cold environments. This case report describes continuous core temperature data from a solo crossing of Ne...
