Reiki: the gentle healing practice that is often misunderstood ✨
Many people are curious about Reiki but wonder… Is it religious? Is it just “woo woo”? How does it actually work?
Let’s clear that up.
Reiki is not a religion.
It does not require any belief system, worship, or spiritual doctrine. You do not need to be religious, spiritual, or “believe in energy” for a Reiki session to be supportive.
Reiki is simply a gentle wellness modality that uses light touch or hands hovering above the body to encourage relaxation and balance.
I am a deeply intuitive person. I feel energy, trust inner guidance, and honour the spiritual side of life.
But I also love science. I like understanding why something helps. My practical brain likes receipts. 😉
So how might Reiki work scientifically?
Current research shows Reiki helps by supporting the nervous system.
Many of us live in a constant state of stress: rushing, worrying, overthinking, bracing for the next thing.
This keeps the body in sympathetic mode (fight-or-flight).
During a Reiki session, people experience deep relaxation. Heart rate slows, breathing deepens, muscles soften, and the body can shift toward the parasympathetic state (rest, digest, repair).
When the body feels safe, it can function better. This supports:
✨ reduced stress and anxiety
✨ better sleep
✨ lower tension
✨ improved mood
✨ decreased pain perception
✨ emotional regulation
✨ a greater sense of calm and wellbeing
Researchers also explore the role of therapeutic touch, human connection, intention, and biofield interactions (the body’s subtle electromagnetic fields).
Science is still catching up in some areas, but the relaxation response alone is powerful medicine.
Reiki is in hospitals & integrative care:
- Reiki has been offered in some hospitals, cancer centers, hospice settings, and wellness clinics as a complementary therapy alongside medical care. - It can be used to help patients manage stress, anxiety, pain, fatigue, and emotional overwhelm.
Important note: Reiki is an accompaniment — something that can work beautifully beside allopathic medicine, counselling, physiotherapy, massage, and other supportive care.
I believe healing can be both practical and profound. 🔬♥️
Science and Spirit do not need to compete. They can sit at the same table quite peacefully.
Sometimes the most powerful healing begins when the body relaxes, the mind quiets, and the nervous system remembers safety.
That may sound simple… but simple does not mean insignificant. ✨
