Yesterday afternoon members of the WFD visited Green Street Apartments where they performed a fire drill and spoke to some of the residents on what to do in the event of a fire.

WFD would like to welcome its newest member McKenzie Lovell to the team. McKenzie has joined the department and will begin her training in both fire and rescue.

Much of the province is under a heatwave, with strong winds and extreme fire danger levels. Fires can start easily and spread fast in these conditions.

🚫 This is your reminder not to burn during windy or dry conditions. A small spark can travel long distances and ignite dry grass or brush within seconds.

🔥 Conditions can change quickly, even if things seem safe. Always check the weather and local fire restrictions before starting a fire.

Let’s enjoy the outdoors responsibly.

Tonight members of the WFD had a refresher on their vehicle extrication tools as well as nozzle and hydrant operations and using foam to fight fire. Foam systems help to extinguish and smother flames better than water, and essentially doubles the effectiveness of water. Foam can be used in wildland fire, vehicle fires and even structures to help extinguish flames.

The Last Mile

Our First Responder friends in Melville, Saskatchewan recently took the PARTY Program one step further by creating this powerful video. It is raw, emotional, and incredibly real.
This life like production shows how one split second decision can change lives forever. Not only for the victim, but for families, friends, first responders, and entire communities.
The video is 17 minutes long… 17 minutes that could literally save a life and change the way someone thinks before making a risky decision. Please take the time to watch it. Share it with your children, your family, your friends, and anyone who may benefit from its message.
Public education plays a critical role in preventing tragedy, and initiatives like this are helping make a difference by starting important conversations and creating awareness.
A huge kudos to everyone involved in bringing this video to life and courageously capturing the devastating effects that poor decisions can have. Your efforts will undoubtedly make an impact and help save lives. g events like this.

During Paramedic Services Week, May 17-23, the Whitewood Fire Department would like to recognize and thank our local paramedics — and paramedics everywhere — for the incredible work they do each and every day.

As firefighters, we work alongside paramedics on many emergency calls throughout the year. From medical emergencies and motor vehicle collisions to major incidents, we see firsthand the professionalism, compassion and dedication they bring to every situation.

They are more than just our partners on scene — they are part of our WFD family.

Whether providing lifesaving care, supporting patients and families, or standing shoulder to shoulder with first responders during difficult moments, paramedics are always there when communities need them most.

From all of us at WFD, thank you for your service, sacrifice and commitment to helping others.

Training never stops in the fire service, no matter what your rank.

Last weekend, Deputy Chief Chris Ashfield and Lt. Shane Thompson travelled to Kindersley to attend the Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs Conference alongside approximately 250 other fire service leaders from across the province.

Over the course of the conference, members took part in sessions covering emergency preparedness, dangerous goods incidents, railway response, mutual aid, fire investigations, emergency evacuation planning, 911 technology updates and the growing importance of mental health supports for first responders. The weekend also included a trade show and demonstrations of some of the latest in fire and rescue equipment.

One presentation during the weekend that left a lasting impact was delivered by Todd Abel, Incident Commander of the 2013 Yarnell Hill Wildfire tragedy in Arizona. The tragedy of that fire that claimed the life of 19 firefighters was turned into the movie “Only the Brave.” Todd’s personal experiences of that event and his powerful presentation shared lessons in leadership, communication and decision-making during critical incidents, while also speaking openly about the lasting effects emergency events can have on responders and commanders alike.

Opportunities like this are invaluable for bringing knowledge and ideas back to our department and community while continuing to strengthen relationships with departments across Saskatchewan.
