In a new study in Women’s Health journal, researchers interviewed 42 women who had experienced suicidal thoughts or mental health problems during perimenopause or menopause.
For many interviewees, this was the first time they had experienced these feelings of being overwhelmed, hopeless, or having “nothing left to give.” Many found relief in menopause hormone care, but many also had to fight to be heard or taken seriously by healthcare professionals.
For women who already struggle with their mental health, perimenopause can exacerbate their symptoms. Counselling and hormone care can work together to help get you through.
The researchers’ conclusion: “Better understanding, quicker access to hormone treatment and more support from health professionals could save lives. More open conversations about menopause, especially the emotional side, are urgently needed.”
