Is laser hair removal safe and effective on dark skin tones👧🏾👧🏿 (Fitzpatrick scale 5 & 6)?

The simple answer is yes, BUT only if the laser has the appropriate wavelength such as YAG or Diode eg. soprano ice is a diode wavelength machine. These wavelengths have the ability to bypass the melanin in the surface of the skin and target the root structures of the hair.

Why can’t all laser machines work on dark skin tones? Eg. IPL is a ❌ for dark skin.

Laser’s concentrated beam used in hair removal was drawn to the pigment or melanin in the skin. This technology worked by heating the pigment until it destroyed the hair follicle; this was effective unless the patient had dark skin or light hair. Unfortunately, the melanin also heats up by laser, so when dark skin is treated, the treatment is often ineffective in damaging the hair, and can even dangerous to the skin. But with significant technological advancements “TRUE” laser machines can effectively target the bulb of the hair being treated without harming the surrounding skin, making hair removal perfect for darker skin tones.

One of the most commonly asked questions is what type of laser do you use⁉️ We proudly use a “diode laser” but did you know there are at least 4 other contenders on the market for laser machines to consider.

Let’s take a quick look at these different types of lasers to truly understand what suites you best.

Ruby Laser
- First technology to be approved for laser hair removal
- Considered to be much slower than other methods
- Works best on lighter, finer hairs on light skin
- May experience side effects: Swelling, soreness, feeling of a sunburn & redness on treatment area

Alexandrite Laser
-Ideal for lighter skin tones: works best on skin types 1-3
-Usually takes more sessions to achieve desired results
-Quickly covers large spot areas
-Works well on getting rid of thinner, lighter have

Diode Laser
-Has a higher pe*******on rate, meaning that is bypasses the melanin in the epidermis and aims straight for the dark matter in the hair follicle. Making this the safest machine for darker skins tones
-Highly effective for course hair and medium to dark skin tones
-Often requires less sessions to achieve desired results
-Does not work well with grey, blonde or red hairs

Nd: YAG Laser
-Considered to be one of the strongest lasers that works best on coarse hair and dark skin
-The longest wavelength, which means fewer sessions but tends to be more uncomfortable
-Protects darkly pigmented epidermis by bypassing it and going straight for the hair follicle
-Not effective on blond, red or grey hairs

Intense Pulsed Light(IPL)
-IPL is only really effective on dark hair and skin types I and II.
-Not considered to be a true laser, just a light source
-Used to damage hair follicles in similar way as laser but much less effective
-Takes more sessions to achieve results
-Considered to be painful (elastic band pinches)
-Laser uses monochromatic light rays of one set wavelength but IPL uses full spectrum light, which means it sends out rays of different wavelengths at the same time

⚡️What type of laser do we us?⚡️

We proudly use the Alma Soprano Ice 810 nm hair removal machine . We absolutely love and stand by this brand & product for many reasons but mostly because it is recognized as one of the most complete and effective laser hair removal solution available today.

By incorporating multiple laser wavelengths and technologies, the Soprano ICE allows us to treat the widest range of patients and hair types all year round, as well as administer treatments quickly and comfortably all while achieving the best possible clinical results.

The Soprano Ice has been deemed virtually pain free due to its cold sapphire tip which minimizes the risk of burns on the skin surface while maintaining heat within the dermis where hair follicles are treated. It is also FDA/ Health Canada approved. It is designed to specifically target the melanin pigment in the hair root and destroy it without damaging surrounding tissues. It can be also be used on any skin type and colour unlike many IPL machines that only allow up to a medium skin tone and have a strong elastic band sensation.

Depending on skin type & hair thickness, a course of 6-8 treatments can achieve about 80-90% reduction in hair. While this service does need to be maintained, most clients only need a quick yearly touch up once all sessions have been completed.
