🌸 To all psychiatry trainees who are also mothers: thank you.

Being a resident physician while raising children requires extraordinary dedication, resilience and strength. Many colleagues work part-time in order to balance family life and psychiatric training — yet this often means that specialist training takes much longer than expected.

Although psychiatric postgraduate training officially lasts a minimum of 6 years in Switzerland, the average duration is often closer to 9 years. This reality shows why flexible and family-friendly training structures are so important.

At SVPA-ASMAP-ASAP, we want to continue supporting young psychiatrists — especially colleagues who are mothers — by advocating for fair conditions, transparent training pathways and better compatibility between medical careers and family life.

A sustainable healthcare system must also care for the people working within it. 💜

Extended waiting times for FMH specialist titles – an update

Many doctors are currently waiting months — sometimes over a year — for the issuance of their FMH specialist title. These delays have significantly affected psychiatry trainees, impacting career planning, contracts, and income.

SVPA-ASMAP-ASAP has closely followed the situation and published a comprehensive overview covering:
• how the crisis developed since 2024,
• the roles of FMH, SIWF/ISFM, vsao-asmac, and SGPP/SSPP,
• recent institutional responses and decisions,
• and practical steps trainees can take.

We invite colleagues to share their experiences — directly or anonymously — and will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.

Statement on foreign-trained residents in Switzerland

Following a recent interview by the president of the VSAO-ASMAC, the SVPA-ASMAP-ASAP committee issued an open letter addressing concerns about the framing of sensitive topics, including foreign-trained doctors and psychiatric training.

We strongly believe that tragic patient cases should not be used to advance political arguments. (https://www.derbund.ch/aerztemangel-in-der-schweiz-braucht-es-mehr-studienplaetze-330295500925 )
Our association stands for safe, high-quality, and equal psychiatry training and values the essential contribution of colleagues trained abroad.

We hope for more careful public communication and stronger collaboration with young professional associations in the future.

SVPA-ASMAP-ASAP at the First EFPT Winter Event in Strasbourg
From 21 to 23 November 2025, nearly fifty psychiatric trainees from all over Europe gathered at the Strasbourg Simulation Center (UNISIMES) for the very first EFPT Winter Event.
The Strasbourg Winter Event was explicitly designed as a small, intensive meeting with a cap of around 50 participants and priority given to active working-group members. Over one weekend, participants alternated between:
• Keynote lectures by invited experts,
• Practical workshops using simulation-based methods,
• Dedicated working-group sessions to move projects forward.
and explored the magical winter illuminations of beautiful Starsbourg.

svpaasmapasap 🎉 What a success at Medifuture 2025!

As is now tradition, the SVPA delegation joined forces with our colleagues from Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ARGE) to showcase our specialties to medical students at Medifuture. Under the patronage of the SGPP and SGKJPP, our stand had an overwhelming number of visitors throughout the day, and the curiosity and engagement we saw for psychiatry and child & adolescent psychiatry were truly impressive. Our quiz helped the students get a taste of psychiatry and strike interesting conversations about the complexity of our day to day work. We also took the opportunity to network with our fellow young medical societies to discuss important topics like the SIWF title delays and how to support associative commitment during residency.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand, asked questions, and shared their interest in our fields. We’re excited about the future and look forward to continuing to inspire and support the next generation of psychiatrists.

Stay tuned for more!

SVPA-ASMAP-ASAP retreat 2025:
Building Tools, Building Trust
A Productive and Inspiring Two-Day Retreat.

Eleven active members of the association gathered for a two-day retreat in Geneva, with the aim to develop the tools we believe our trainees need while learning to work together, gaining trust in ourselves and our initiatives.

The first evening began with a convivial networking during the Meet and Greet, the first step of collaborating with new members of the association, where we also had the pleasure of meeting colleagues from the Young Neurologists Association, strengthening our professional ties.

The following day was dedicated to developing a comprehensive Toolkit for trainees, structured around three key pillars: information of the Training journey to obtain the FMH in psychiatry and psychotherapy, clinical resources for our members, and a coaching program. The day concluded with a lively team-building activity that put both our minds and physical skills to the test, followed by a well-deserved fondue dinner at the typical Bains de Paquis.

On the final day, we held our General Assembly, reviewing the association’s impressive progress over the past year. It has been a particularly dynamic period — we successfully organized the pre-congress in Basel, worked on strengthening our presence in relevant partner associations like the VSAO-ASMAC and the SGPP-SSPP, focusing on advocacy work and visibility.

We’re also proud to share that our membership grew by 89%! Our treasurer presented a detailed financial report, confirming that we remain on a solid track. We concluded the meeting with the election of new board members, with many new voices from all over Switzerland to help us move forward with this year’s goal, making the tools we built in this retreat a reality — stay tuned for the upcoming announcements!

And finally, a brunch before waving goodbye as everyone regained their corners of Switzerland, ready for the year ahead.

🧠 Residents’ Day & SSPP Congress 2025 in Basel

An inspiring event bringing together over 160 psychiatry trainees for hands-on workshops, debates, and discussions on the future of mental health training. From ethical challenges in psychedelic therapy to the evolution of the bio-psycho-social model, it was a day that truly put residents at the center.

A huge thank-you to everyone who contributed to this vibrant exchange of knowledge and ideas!

📍 Next stop: Lugano — 16.09.2026!
We’re already looking forward to the next Residents’ Day in beautiful Ticino. See you there!

The 2nd edition of Residents’ Day, the event dedicated to psychiatry trainees within the Swiss Congress of Psychiatry, took place on 17 September at UPK
