The Boy Behind the Addiction

There was a boy. Bright eyes. Big dreams. The kind of child who made his mother smile just by walking into a room.

Then life happened.

His home became a place of shouting and silence. His father left. His grades dropped. He sat alone at school while others laughed in groups. Nobody asked him how he was doing. Nobody noticed the weight he was carrying.

So he found something that made the weight disappear at least for a little while.

First it was once. Then twice. Then every day.

People looked at him and saw a drug problem. They shook their heads. Some crossed the street. Some whispered.

But when he came to CRC, we did not see a drug problem.

We saw a boy in pain.

We sat with him. We listened really listened to the story behind the addiction. The loneliness. The broken home. The feeling of being invisible to everyone who was supposed to love him.

Because here is what we know at CRC: the drug is never really the problem. The drug is just the answer a hurting person found to a problem nobody helped them solve.

True rehabilitation is not just about stopping the drug. It is about healing the wound that the drug was covering.

That boy is healing today. Slowly. Courageously. Wholly.

And that is exactly why CRC exist .

The CRC team gathered in full force to wrap up Mental Health Awareness Month with an impactful on-site campaign at the University of Bamenda and along ENS Street in Bambili.

In partnership with Gifted Hands and Healing Voices, we educated over 150 students, shop owners, lecturers, and passersby on the importance of prioritizing mental health. We emphasized the significance of parents engaging in friendly conversations with their children to foster openness and understanding.

Additionally, we distributed informative stickers featuring our contact information to encourage ongoing support and communication. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event a success! ๐Ÿ’š

Our society has programmed men to be strong, to always raise their heads up in every situation, never to show emotions, never to show any signs of weakness.
The urge to respond to every situation with โ€œ Iโ€™m a man, I should keep quiet and handle it โ€œ

Consequently we have the men piling and piling all the hurt and pain and locking it away in the dark cupboards of their minds. Everyday the hospitals record men with skyrocketed blood pressure levels and more deaths in males than females.

They say showing emotions or signs or hurt or even crying as a man is an embarrassment and a disgrace.

For generations upon generations men have dealt with this stigma and made it a way of life.

We at CRC are here to tell you NO.
No you do not need to hide and bottle up your emotions. No you donโ€™t need to keep the tears away. No you do not need to say โ€œ Iโ€™m a man, Iโ€™ll be fineโ€ in every situation.

Rather we say YES. Yes to crying when that pain hurts so deep. Yes to telling a friend or relative about the struggle youโ€™re going through. Yes to taking out time to properly deal with all your emotions. Yes to seeking help when you need it.

For this yearโ€™s mental health awareness month, we want to challenge every man out there to show emotions. Be it pain, joy, sorrow, happiness, love, hurt, conflict of mind, indecisiveness, anger and what not. Before the month comes to an end, make sure you have expressed all of these emotions outwardly and not felt embarrassed or ashamed.

Dear men, your mental health matters to us. You matter to us. Do not hesitate to seek out when you need help. We promise a non judgemental listening ear and words of wisdom to help you get through whatever hurdle you may be facing.
