🎗️ TODAY'S CANCER AWARENESS TALKING POINT
CHILDHOOD CANCER: KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS
Children can develop cancer too, and the early signs may sometimes look like common childhood illnesses.
1. Unexplained or persistent fever
A fever that keeps coming back or lasts longer than expected without a clear infection should be assessed. It does not automatically mean cancer, but persistent unexplained fever deserves medical attention.
2. Unusual tiredness or weakness
A child who becomes unusually weak, tired, less active, or pale may need evaluation, especially when the change persists. This can occur with conditions such as anemia, including anemia associated with leukemia.
3. Unexplained weight loss
Losing weight without a change in diet, exercise, or another obvious explanation can be a warning sign. Persistent unexplained weight loss should be checked.
4. A growing lump or swelling
A lump that continues to grow or does not go away—whether in the abdomen, neck, chest, or elsewhere—should be examined by a healthcare professional.
5. Persistent bone or joint pain
Repeated or unexplained pain in the bones or joints, particularly if it interferes with normal activities or keeps getting worse, should not be ignored.
6. Frequent headaches or vomiting
Repeated headaches, especially when unusual for the child, or vomiting that occurs repeatedly—particularly in the morning or together with other neurological changes—should be medically assessed.
7. Unusual bleeding or bruising
Frequent unexplained bruises, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or unusual bleeding can sometimes indicate problems affecting blood cells or clotting.
8. Changes in vision or a white glow in the eye
A new change in vision, unusual eye appearance, or a white reflection/glow in the pupil, particularly in photographs, requires prompt medical evaluation because it can be a sign of an eye condition such as retinoblastoma.
9. Persistent infections or not recovering as expected
If a child repeatedly becomes ill, has persistent infections, or does not recover as expected from common illnesses, it is worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
💛 Important message
These signs do not mean a child has cancer. Most of them can have much more common causes. The important thing is when a symptom is persistent, unusual, worsening, or occurring together with other warning signs.
Early recognition → early medical assessment → earlier diagnosis and treatment when needed.
