SELLING LIFE, YET BUYING DEATH?

In 2022 while visiting Cameroon, I met a woman in Mokolo market selling cold pure water under the most brutal afternoon sun. And in her own hand?

A cold Beaufort. Beer.
While selling pure water.
I had to stop and just look.

And that image never left me. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized that is us. That is the story of so many of us.

We grow yam. We have okra climbing in the backyard. Locust beans aka dadawa, the kind that makes the whole pot smell like your grandmother is still alive and cooking. We harvest it, we carry it to market, we sell it. Then we take that same money and buy spaghetti, seed oil and chilled Coke and we call it enjoyment.

We are literally selling our medicine and buying our sickness.
These foods our ancestors ate they weren't just "traditional."
They were functional. Anti-inflammatory. Blood sugar balancing. Gut healing. Nobody sat them down and explained macronutrients. Life just taught them. Seasons taught them. Watching who got sick and who didn't taught them.

That knowledge lived in the kitchen, in the market, in the hands that stirred the pot.

But somewhere along the way, we were taught that foreign means better. And we swallowed that lie the same way that woman swallowed her beer without even questioning it.

So what are you trading away right now that is actually worth more than you think?
