A MOMENT OF CONNECTION & COMMUNITY

The closing ceremony of the Na We We Sports Jamboree organized by Local Youth Corner Cameroon was a beautiful celebration of community, youth and collective impact.

It was a pleasure to see Dr. Charles Effiom , Visionary of EFFIOM Clinic, share a brief and warm exchange with H.E. Mounouna Foutsou, Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education (MINJEC).

At EFFIOM Clinic, we believe our responsibility goes beyond the walls of our facility. We are committed to being present in our communities, supporting initiatives that promote healthy lives, empowered youth and positive social impact.

Proud to be part of the movement.

SUNDAY HEALTH REMINDER | HABITS FOR A HEALTHY HEART | HAPPY SUNDAY

Taking care of your heart is not something you do only when there is a problem. It starts with the choices you make every day.

Here are a few habits to build:

💧 Drink enough water throughout the day.
😴 Prioritize quality sleep and adequate rest.

DIABETES & HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: A DANGEROUS PAIR

Diabetes and high blood pressure often go hand in hand.

When blood sugar stays high, it can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of high blood pressure. And when both conditions are present, the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems and other complications becomes even greater.

The good news? Both can be managed.

Know your blood sugar. Know your blood pressure. Take your medications as prescribed, eat wisely, stay active, and keep up with your check-ups.

Don’t manage one and ignore the other. Your heart, kidneys and whole body are connected.

Common Myths & Facts About High Blood Pressure

MYTH 1: “I feel fine, so my blood pressure must be normal.”
FACT:Hypertension often has no noticeable symptoms. You can feel perfectly well while high blood pressure is damaging your body.

MYTH 2: “Hypertension only affects older people.”
FACT: Anyone can develop high blood pressure, including young adults.

MYTH 3: “If my blood pressure comes down, I can stop my medication.”
FACT:A normal reading may mean your medication and lifestyle changes are working. Never stop prescribed medication without speaking to your healthcare provider.

MYTH 4: “I don't eat much salt, so I can't have hypertension.”
FACT: Salt is only one risk factor. Age, family history, excess weight, inactivity, alcohol, to***co use and other health conditions can also contribute.

MYTH 5: “One high reading means I have hypertension.”
FACT: One reading is not usually enough to diagnose hypertension. Repeated measurements are generally needed.

MYTH 6: “Herbal remedies can replace blood pressure medication.”
FACT: Do not replace prescribed treatment with herbs without medical advice. Some herbal products can also interact with medicines or affect blood pressure.

The best way to know your blood pressure is to CHECK IT. Don't rely on how you feel.

Know your numbers. Protect your heart.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO TAKE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION CORRECTLY?

One common mistake is stopping medication because “I feel fine” or because the blood pressure has returned to normal.

But here's the important part: a normal reading may mean the treatment is working—not that the hypertension is gone. WHO advises patients not to stop hypertension medication without consulting their healthcare professional.

✅ Take your medication exactly as prescribed.
✅ Take it at the recommended time each day.
✅ Don't skip doses or share medication.
✅ Keep your follow-up appointments.
✅ Tell your healthcare provider about side effects or difficulties taking your medication.

Control your blood pressure. Protect your heart, brain and kidneys.
On treatment? Don't stop on your own. Speak to your healthcare provider first.

STRESS & HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: THE CONNECTION IS DEEPER THAN YOU THINK

When you're stressed, your body activates its “fight-or-flight” response. Stress hormones such as adrenaline make your heart beat faster and cause your blood vessels to tighten—temporarily raising your blood pressure.

But here's what many people don't know:

The problem isn't one stressful day. It's when the stress response keeps happening again and again.

Long-term stress can affect your sleep, eating habits, physical activity, and more which can influence your blood pressure. WHO also notes that chronic stress can worsen existing health problems.

Research has even found that people with higher levels of stress hormones may have a greater risk of developing hypertension and cardiovascular problems later on.

Managing stress is therefore not just about feeling calm. It's part of taking care of your heart.

Try to:
Take time to relax
Stay physically active
Prioritize good sleep
Talk to people you trust
Check your blood pressure regularly

Don't assume stress is “just stress.” Know what it's doing to your body.
