On Wednesday, 6th May, the Foundation for Girls Education and Sanitation (FOGES) was honored to visit City Light Nursery and Primary School, Mile 18 Bomaka, as part of our Menstrual Education Tour for primary schools.

At FOGES, we believe no girl should be left behind ,not even primary school pupils. Every girl deserves access to the right information, support, and confidence as she grows.

During this session, we educated the Primary 6 pupils on puberty, how to prepare for menstruation, and how to properly manage their periods while in school. We were privileged to interact with 23 amazing pupils.

We continue to build, educate, and empower young girls for a brighter and healthier future.

Together for a period-friendly world.

Special appreciation to the administration of City Light Nursery and Primary School for giving us this opportunity to impact young lives.

The moment we mentioned “menstruation,” half of the class laughed, some pupils looked down shyly… and a few boys suddenly became very serious students.

“Miss, so the boys are also staying for this talk?”

That one question alone already told us how society has conditioned children to think menstruation is a “girls-only secret.”

An African proverb says, “Strike the iron while it is hot.”
And honestly, there is no better time to educate children about puberty and menstruation than before confusion, fear, and misinformation begin.

On Wednesday, 6th May 2026, the Foundation for Girls Education and Sanitation (FOGES) visited the Primary 6 pupils of Nansi Care Primary School, Bomaka for an interactive session on puberty, body changes, menstrual hygiene, and breaking menstrual stigma.

At first, some pupils were shy.
Some were giggling.
Some boys suddenly found the ceiling very interesting 😭

But as the discussion continued, hands started going up, questions started coming, and the classroom slowly became a safe space for learning, openness, and understanding.

One thing became very clear: children are eager to learn when we create room for honest conversations.

Menstrual education is not just for girls. Boys also need to understand menstruation so they grow up informed, respectful, and free from harmful myths and stigma.

We were warmly welcomed by both the pupils and teachers, and we left grateful for the opportunity to educate, interact, and share meaningful conversations with these amazing young minds.

Little by little, conversation by conversation, one classroom at a time, we can normalize menstruation and create a generation that treats it with understanding instead of shame

“WHAT SHE DIDN’T CALL BY NAME”

She didn’t know what to call it.
It wasn’t always violent. Sometimes it was pressure.

Sometimes it was jokes that made her uncomfortable.

Sometimes it was touches that lasted too long. And sometimes, it was fear she could not explain.

But deep inside, she always knew one thing: it didn’t feel right.

That is what sexual assault often looks like, not always loud, but always a violation of consent.

Sexual assault is any deliberate, unwanted and non-essential act of a sexual nature, either completed or attempted, that is perpetrated against a child, including for exploitative purposes, and that results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, pain or psychological suffering

Consent must be free, informed, and enthusiastic, anything less is not consent.
And yet, many girls stay silent because they were never taught:

what consent means,

how to say no,

Their discomfort is valid.

We must change this.
A safer world for girls begins with education, awareness, and the courage to speak.

Reflection:
How many girls are silently living through things they cannot yet name?

HAPPY NEW WEEK

This week, choose consistency.
Not perfection. Not speed. Just consistency.

Show up even when it’s hard.
Start small. Stay steady. Keep going.

At FOGES, this is who we are:
We educate. We build. We empower.
First within ourselves… then we take it to the world.

Don’t give up on your dreams.
Growth may be slow, but it is always worth it.

And as we rise, let’s keep advocating for menstrual health & hygiene, because informed voices create lasting change.

Let’s make this week count

“THE SILENCE SHE GREW UP WITH”

She grew up learning many things, how to greet elders properly, how to sit “correctly,” how to stay quiet when adults are speaking.

But no one taught her the most important lesson: her body belongs to her.

When her body began to change, she felt confused. She noticed the whispers, the stares, the comments she did not understand. And slowly, she learned something dangerous, silence was expected of her.

This is where the problem begins.

Because when girls are not taught about their bodies, silence becomes normal, and boundaries become unclear.

Globally, the reality is even more alarming: 650 million (or 1 in 5) girls and women alive today have been subjected to sexual violence as children. Among boys and men, between 410 and 530 million (or around 1 in 7) experienced sexual violence in childhood. sexual violence in most cases never reported or spoken about.

At the Foundation for Girls’ Education and Sanitation, we believe: A girl who knows her body is a girl who is safer.

This week, we begin a conversation on menstrual health, bodily autonomy, and sexual safety, because knowledge is the first form of protection.

Reflection:
At what point do we stop teaching girls to be silent, and start teaching them to be safe and informed?

💔 “What if HIV is closer than we think, but quieter than we expect?”

This April, as we mark STI Awareness Month, FOGES ,Foundation for Girls’ Education and Sanitation opens a simple but important conversation.

Let’s talk about HIV,not as a distant topic, but as something we all should understand clearly.

Most people think HIV always “shows itself”… but that’s not true.

It is a virus that weakens the immune system slowly, and in many cases, a person may look completely healthy for years.

And that is where the danger lies.

👀 So what should we actually know?

HIV is mainly spread through:

🎯Unprotected sexual contact

🎯Contact with infected blood,(including unsafe needles or instruments)

🎯From mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding if not prevented

🎯 Transfusion of infected blood

But here is something important:
👉 A large number of infections happen because people don’t know their status.

Early signs, when they appear, can look like common illnesses:Fever,Tiredness,Rash,Sore throat, Swollen glands

Later, when untreated, it can lead to repeated infections, weight loss, and serious illnesses that take advantage of a weakened body.

But here’s the hope in this story:

🎯HIV is preventable and manageable.

🎯Testing is simple,but powerful

🎯Condoms work when used correctly

🎯Treatment (ARVs) allows people to live long, healthy lives

🎯Prevention during pregnancy can protect babies completely

💬 Let’s pause and reflect:

If HIV can stay silent for years…
Shouldn’t knowing your status be a normal part of self-care?

Let’s talk more. Let’s test more. Let’s protect more.
