Dehydration can make high blood pressure (hypertension) harder to control and can increase cardiovascular strain in several important ways:
1. Blood becomes more concentrated
When you don’t drink enough water, the volume of fluid in your blood drops. Your blood can become thicker and more concentrated, which increases resistance in the blood vessels. The heart then has to pump harder, which can push blood pressure higher.
2. Activation of the “stress hormones”
Dehydration triggers survival hormones like ADH (antidiuretic hormone) and angiotensin II. These hormones tell the body to retain water and tighten blood vessels (vasoconstriction). Narrower vessels = higher blood pressure.
3. Increased sodium concentration
With less water in the body, sodium becomes more concentrated in the bloodstream. This can lead to fluid imbalance and vascular pressure changes, both of which can worsen hypertension.
4. Extra strain on the heart
Because the blood is harder to circulate, the heart compensates by pumping more forcefully. Over time, this can contribute to heart strain and reduced cardiovascular efficiency.
5. Reduced kidney efficiency
The kidneys help regulate blood pressure. When dehydrated, they receive less blood flow and may respond by retaining more salt
