A Breakthrough Application of the Toumai® Surgical Robot in Brazil

MicroPort® MedBot™ extends its warmest congratulations to the USP - Universidade de São Paulo on the successful completion of the first series of robotic-assisted telesurgeries within Brazil’s public healthcare system, the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS).

All procedures were performed with the assistance of the Toumai® Surgical Robot and its cutting-edge telesurgery technology, delivering real-time, stable, and ultra-low-latency performance throughout the entire surgical process. Conducted in real-world clinical settings, these cases rigorously validated the feasibility and safety of robotic telesurgery in public healthcare environments.

This was not a technical demonstration, but a commercially implemented clinical application:

🔹 Multiple oncology-related procedures were successfully completed, including prostatectomy, neck tumor resection, partial lung resection, and radical hysterectomy for uterine cancer。The neck tumor resection was Toumai®’s first remote head and neck surgery, and the partial lung resection marked its first overseas (outside China) remote thoracic surgery;

🔹 Compared with conventional approaches, procedures demonstrated significantly improved efficiency and notably reduced blood loss;

🔹 Patients experienced faster recovery, with some discharged within 24–48 hours postoperatively;

🔹 Full on-site surgical teams and multiple layers of safety redundancy were maintained at all times to ensure clinical safety.

This milestone marks a pivotal shift—advanced surgical technologies are moving from elite centers toward broader public accessibility. As telesurgery, robotics, and minimally invasive techniques converge within public healthcare systems, the boundaries of modern medicine are being fundamentally redefined.

More importantly, this initiative directly addresses a core challenge in public healthcare: How to overcome geographical barriers and extend high-quality surgical expertise to a broader patient population——telesurgery not only enhances the precision and safety of minimally invasive surgery, but also opens new pathways for surgeon training, telementoring, and regional clinical collaboration.

This project was jointly advanced by MicroPort MedBot™ and USP in strict compliance with regulatory requirements. Device performance, network stability, and clinical workflows were validated through a phased and systematic approach, laying a solid foundation for future scaled deployment and policy implementation.

Australia’s First Toumai® System Arrives in Lismore

MicroPort® MedBot™ extends its warmest congratulations to St Vincent’s Hospital Lismore on the successful introduction of the Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robotic System. This milestone marks the hospital as the first private hospital in Australia to adopt the Toumai® advanced surgical robotic platform.

At the official presentation, Hospital Chairman Damian Chapelle, CEO Peter Fahey, Urologist Dr Kenny Low, and MicroPort General Manager ANZ, Aijaz Shaikh, together with members of the media, local dignitaries, hospital staff, and the public, jointly witnessed this important moment.

By enhancing surgical precision and operational stability, the Toumai® system supports surgeons in performing complex procedures with high quality. Initially, the system will be applied across urology, gynaecology, and general surgery, bringing a higher standard of surgical care to patients in the Northern Rivers region while supporting faster postoperative recovery. Since February this year, the first robotic-assisted procedures have been successfully performed. As more surgeons complete structured training and commence clinical use in the coming months, procedure volumes are expected to grow steadily.

MedBot™ looks forward to establishing a long-term and close partnership with St Vincent’s Hospital Lismore, working together to continuously advance high-quality robotic surgery locally and deliver more accessible, high-standard surgical care for patients.

Toumai® Surgical Robot Enters Clinical Practice at PUMCH

The Department of General Surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) has successfully completed a robot-assisted gastric cardia tumor resection using the Toumai® laparoscopic surgical robot, marking the system’s formal clinical adoption at one of China’s leading tertiary hospitals.

The procedure involved a 4 cm tumor located at the gastric fundus–cardia junction, an anatomically deep and technically challenging area adjacent to the cardia. Following comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation, the surgical team selected Toumai® robotic-assisted surgery to achieve complete tumor resection while preserving cardia function.

During the operation, Toumai® provided a stable, high-definition three-dimensional visual field and enhanced dexterity through its multi–degree-of-freedom robotic arms, enabling precise dissection and suturing within a confined operative space.

According to Professor Wang Weibin, Executive Deputy Director (Acting) of the Department of General Surgery at PUMCH, Toumai® demonstrated clear advantages over conventional open and laparoscopic approaches in complex upper gastrointestinal procedures, further validating its safety, reliability, and clinical value.

Karazanashvili Robotic Center: The Launch Point of Toumai®’s Global Journey
We are proud to announce that under the outstanding leadership of Professor Karazanashvili Guram, the Karazanashvili Robotic Center (mmt.ge) has completed nearly 300 robotic procedures.
On February 27, 2024, driven by Professor Karazanashvili’s visionary strategy and firm commitment, the Center introduced the Toumai® Robotic Surgical System and successfully performed Toumai®’s first robotic-assisted surgery overseas. This was more than a successful operation — it was a milestone that reshaped the trajectory of surgical advancement in the South Caucasus and officially launched Toumai®’s global commercialization journey.
Over the past two years, through continuous clinical practice and refinement, the Center has achieved a systemic leap in robotic surgical capability across the region. From standardized clinical governance and perioperative system development to multidisciplinary collaboration and quality control, the program has aligned comprehensively with international standards — ushering the region into a new era of robotic surgery.
As a key partner in Toumai®’s international expansion, we have witnessed a series of landmark achievements:
✅ Elevating robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy to internationally advanced standards in the Caucasus region.
✅ Successfully performing radical cystectomy with intracorporeal orthotopic neobladder reconstruction — one of the most technically demanding procedures in modern urology.
✅ Establishing routine capability for high-complexity robotic procedures while enabling real-time cross-regional collaboration through Toumai®’s telesurgery technology.
✅ Playing a leading and demonstrative role in advancing robotic surgery programs across Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
The Karazanashvili Robotic Center represents not only clinical excellence, but also the starting point of Toumai®’s global mission — bringing advanced robotic surgical technology across borders, empowering surgical teams, and accelerating the global sharing of medical innovation.
MicroPort® MedBot™ extends its highest respect and sincere congratulations to Professor Karazanashvili and the entire team. We look forward to continuing this journey together and shaping the next chapter of robotic surgery worldwide.
