The craving doesn't hit at 6pm. It hits at 11.

The house is quiet. Everyone's asleep. And your brain starts making the case. "One won't hurt." "You've earned it." "Tomorrow you start fresh."

Here's what most guys don't know: a craving is not a command. It's a wave. And a wave has a peak — usually 15 to 20 minutes — then it breaks. Every single time.

You don't have to defeat it. You have to outlast it.

Three things that buy you those 20 minutes:
1. Change rooms. Physically move — the craving is anchored to where you're sitting.
2. Cold water on your face and wrists. It interrupts the loop in your nervous system. Sounds too simple. Works anyway.

Nobody tells you the truth about why you drink.

It's not because you're weak. It's not because you lack willpower. It's because at some point, that drink was the only thing that turned the volume down.

The pressure at work. The bills. The marriage that went quiet. The version of yourself you don't recognize in the mirror anymore.

Why are men often limited to just two emotional settings: "fine" or "angry"?

This restrictive pattern is a painful symptom of toxic masculinity, a set of harmful beliefs that dictate what "being a real man" entails. From a young age, many men are taught to "toughen up," suppress distress, and view vulnerability, sadness, or fear as unacceptable weaknesses.

Anger is the one emotion everyone understands and expects men to express, making it a safe, acceptable outlet.

"Fine" is the default silence, often mistaken for stoicism or toughness. In reality, this silence can be a protective factor when a man doesn't know how to define or express what he's actually feeling.

When men are discouraged from exploring their full range of emotions, they become fearful of feeling anything that pulls on the heart. Suppressing these feelings—whether grief, fear, or sadness—is detrimental to mental health and can lead to anxiety, depression, and an increased risk of su***de.

For many, this emotional avoidance becomes the root of addiction. The addiction itself is often a symptom, not the cause, masking an underlying issue like trauma or mental illness that has gone unaddressed because of the cultural pressure to simply "man up".

It takes courage to face those fears and explore an inner life. We need to do better. We need a cultural shift to give men the space to express their emotions and seek help without fear of being judged or seen as weak. Real strength is found in vulnerability and the choice to break the generational cycle.
