Seasonal allergic rhinitis 🤧🌻
Sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose every spring? …
You might be dealing with seasonal allergic rhinitis, a very common reaction to pollen (a lightweight powder produced by plants). The immune system triggers a range of irritant and inflammatory signs and symptoms.
🌻What you can do!
1. The immune system reacts to the presence of pollen by producing histamine, which is a key driver of the symptoms. Antihistamines are therefore the mainstay of treatment. The non-sedating antihistamines such as cetirizine, loratadine and bilastine are generally preferred.
2. Intranasal corticosteroids reduce inflammation, swelling and mucus production, relieving associated symptoms of sneezing, congestion and itching.
3. Nasal decongestants such as xylometazoline help to unblock the nose by shrinking blood vessels in the nasal passages. To be used only for short periods of time due to the risk of rebound congestion.
4. Sea water nasal sprays flush out mucus and remove allergens so keep the nasal passages clean and moist.
5. Eye drops wash away allergen like pollen and dust providing relief and comfort.
🌻Simple tips can also make a big difference
• Keep windows closed during high pollen days
• Wear sunglasses
• Use masks covering the nose and mouth
• Shower after being outside
